With the fall season getting underway, everyone is psyched to get riding!

While it is still summer, our fall league teams have begun practicing and, with three new leagues joining the national interscholastic cycling movement this fall, we are anticipating record participation numbers as the competition gets underway the weekend of August 27!

Very exciting times indeed and I hope you will review the NICA News below to get the latest on developments across the NICA fall leagues, details on an exciting contest we have underway, and exciting offerings from a couple of our sponsors. Also, if you are in the San Francisco Bay Area October 1, I hope you might join us to ride and celebrate our founder’s induction into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame!

Enjoy the ride, Austin McInerny

Five States Prepare for

Inaugural Events!

As NICA becomes more well known across the United States and our existing leagues continue to grow and mature, one might not realize the monumental effort, time and work that goes into launching and sustaining a league. Bringing interscholastic cycling to a new state is not possible without the vision, passion and commitment of quality leaders coming together and working tirelessly to get more kids on bikes in their state. We applaud and congratulate these individuals for not only being game changers and history makers, but for their tireless perseverance to begin something that will last into the future and change lives through cycling.

It is with great excitement that we look forward to Nevada, Pennsylvania and Arkansas’ inaugural races in August and September bringing our Fall League count to 12! September also brings New Jersey and North Carolina into the books with inaugural Leaders’ Summits, and in turn brings our Spring League count to 7! To support these launches, NICA National Office staff as well as NICA League staff will be assisting with all new league events. Please help spread the word to friends and family in these states.

Nevada inaugural race, August 28th
Arkansas inaugural race, September 11th
North Carolina inaugural Leaders’ Summit, September 11th & 12th
Pennsylvania inaugural race, September 18th
New Jersey inaugural Leaders Summit, September 24th & 25th

Congratulations to all. Here is to a great Fall season!

We are thrilled Matt Fritzinger has been voted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame! Matt’s huge efforts have made middle and high school MTB racing a reality for current and future generations of young mountain bikers. Matt founded the NorCal High School Cycling League (@norcalleague) in 2001 and NICA (@nationalmtb) in 2009. His efforts have resulted in interscholastic cycling programs in 19 states across America with more to come! Through Matt’s vision, passion, and tireless work, U.S. mountain biking is experiencing the largest resurgence in its history. NICA Alumna, Megan Bradley, took home the Women’s Cat 1 19-24 title. Congrats Megan!

If you were in Mammoth, California for the USA Cycling MTB National Championships, chances are you saw plenty of teenagers out there. The junior fields were some of the largest at the event, and NICA student-athletes represented in serious fashion! Past and present NICA riders took home 17 titles in assorted disciplines, categories and age categories, including cross country, short track, downhill, and enduro. Our favorite stat of them all is that the entire top-20 of the Women’s Cat 1-2 (17-18 age) field currently participate in NICA leagues. NICE WORK ladies!
