“Building strong mind, body and character through interscholastic cycling” – NICA’s new tagline.

Since realizing our original vision of “Coast to Coast by 2020” four years ahead of schedule, our revamped tagline highlights NICA’s central focus as a youth development organization. The recently announced induction of Matt Fitzinger, NICA’s founder, into the Mountain Biking Hall of Fame is just a small testament to the impact NICA has had on the face of mountain biking across the US, and we are stoked and proud to be part of the movement!

We’ve been keeping busy at NJICL headquarters. Dirt Tour info sessions are in full swing, our inaugural Leaders’ Summit is just over a month away, we are proud to welcome a couple of new sponsors, our core race staff ops team is almost fully recruited, and lots more. I hope you’ll keep reading for more info, and I hope to see you soon – either at a Dirt Tour stop, or our Leaders’ Summit in September.

Feel free to reach out any time at 908-872-7940 with any questions or to get involved with the league – we are 100% fueled by volunteers, so more volunteers = more horsepower. Keep the rubber side down, and thanks for your continued support. Best, Tom Kruse

Coach Supporters from across the US at MTB101 train-the-trainer class in Eagle, CO

The NJ Leaders’ Summit is just around the corner and we still have open spots. The early-bird registration discount ends on August 31st, so don’t delay and register now. We will kick off the Saturday session with an overview of NICA including the PitZone registration system, risk management and insurance. Then we’ll move on to starting and managing a team, including funding team operations, building a strong parent community, getting to ‘Yes’ with administrators and more. Late afternoon on Saturday we’ve scheduled some downtime: a group ride followed by an optional group dinner.

Sunday morning we’ll kick things off with presentations on recruiting and working with HS & MS student-athletes, and a rulebook overview. The grand finale will be the MTB 101 coaching session (how to coach mountain biking), an hour of classroom time, followed by an afternoon of on-the-bike training, conducted by NICA’s National Coach and License Manager Bruce Martens, professional NJ-based coach Ben Tufford, and NJICL Coach Supporter Larry Towner. Click here for the draft agenda.

Not only will the Summit provide you with invaluable skills, but it will also be a great opportunity to meet other NJ coaches, share experiences and build your personal network. We hope to see you there!

Dirt Tour stop at Cycle Craft

We’ve had the privilege of traveling around the state for various Dirt Tour info sessions over the past few weeks, and meeting with future NJ student-athletes, their parents, future coaches and volunteers. Welcome to the NJICL family and thank you for sharing the excitement over what we’re building! Big shout-out to Cycle Craft, The Caffeinated Cyclist and Tenafly Bicycle Workshop for hosting us!

Check out the tour schedule here!

The Dirt Tour is geared to provide valuable info for future student-athletes and their parents, as well as coaches and ride leaders. We’ve had great attendance at past stops, why not join us at an upcoming session and find out more about the NJICL and meet members of the NJICL Management Team. Interested in hosting a Dirt Tour stop in your neck of the woods to help raise awareness and help you build a team? Just contact Tom, and we’ll get you on the schedule.

You have probably noticed the pro-looking footer at the bottom of these email blasts, where we proudly display our national and league-level sponsors.

We are proud and thankful to announce the two most recent additions to our roster of sponsors: Kent International and ProPower Coaching. Also a huge shout-out to our existing sponsors: AC Daughtry Security Systems, Shimano/The Highland Sports Group and Metro Printing. Thank you for sharing our passion for getting #morekidsonbikes, we couldn’t do what we’re doing without your support.

Please show your support for our sponsors by giving them a chance to earn your business. And if you’re in a position to sponsor the NJICL through your business or employer, we’d love to hear from you. Please reach out to Dave Kahl or Tom Kruse for more info.

We’ve been busy recruiting our core race staff and are pumped to have built a strong team – thank you to everyone who has stepped up so far. We are still looking for a Chief of Registration, League Race Reporter and Photographer, Merchandise Manager and Advisory Board Members. Any day is a good day to volunteer to get more kids on bikes (-: !

We also have plenty of other volunteer opportunities, either for a day or a specific task – if you are interested in helping out with pre-season work now, please contact Tom.

Once our racing season rolls around, we’ll be looking for a lot of race day walk-on volunteers – course marshals, registration assistants, timing assistants, sweep riders, etc. We will be using the same distribution list that we use for this newsletter to advertise those volunteer opportunities. So if you received this newsletter directly from us, you’re all set. If a friend forwarded this newsletter to you, be sure to sign up for our mailing list at www.newjerseymtb.org/join-newsletter.
