More Cowbell – MT NICA Race Day Report

Copper City Crusher: Three Forks, Montana -

Montana sage country hosted the final race of the maiden MT NICA season where the cold brisk wind kept the rattlesnakes in their dens, the spectators in their puffies, and the racers super chill as they displayed their end of season prowess on the exciting Copper-City track.

A labor of love by the Southwest Montana Bike Association, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, the course area offered a little something for everyone - including a pump track pumping all day with kids and grown-kids alike. One parent described the Friday mountain sunset as a, “Perfect Charles M. Russell painting but instead of cowboys there were bike riders.”

Sixth grader, Maggie, racing for Bozeman Composite, noted this about the Copper-City course, “It looked easy on the pre-ride, not so much elevation gain and loss like the other races, but it was more challenging to find a good pace and stick with it.” She continued, “I felt pretty good about my race and our team did really well.” Team member, Britta added “My favorite race so far and a really good environment to race in.”

The flowy, smooth racecourse made for a lot of fun and last-minute course alterations kept the organizers and racers on their toes with race length adjustments. Maizy, racing 7th grade for the Missoula Mammoths, described the course finish stretch as “Exciting because there was loose rock leading into a sharp final turn so you couldn’t go full-out sprint until you turned the corner.” John, a Missoula parent and race-day volunteer noted, “This place is a phenomenal final course area…it’s beautiful…the view is fantastic…the pit area is cozy…there is food…I just need to find the coffee.”

The Copper-City crusher provided attendees and racers a chance for reflection as the 2019 NICA season drew to a close. Stephanie, a parent of a Billings Dirt Dog explained, “It has been a great opportunity for my kid who has always been a biker to have an organized platform to go and do his thing. Not being super competitive parents, it has been nice to see a venue where there is competition but not super aggressive competition. It is just a great vibe and this last venue is amazing - I want this in my back yard! Eighth grade Missoula racers (Harper, Audrey & Lucy) agree, “The whole season was really fun and we are doing it again next year!”

It begins and ends with community is what several participants highlighted this past weekend. Bozeman coach, Sarah (showing GRiT pride and wearing a tutu), reminisced, “Its’ been more fun than any of us has ever imagined it would be. They have come together as a group, pushed themselves and tried new things they never thought they would try. It’s a great community and it is awesome.”

Final words from 6th grader Maggie sums up how and what she learned this season, “What I learned from the beginning of the season to the end of the season is a lot of technique, control and a lot of ways to contribute to our community. NICA not only focuses on being a great rider, but being a great community member and everything in between.”

- A great rider, a great community member and everything in between – isn’t that what it is all about?

Thank you to all of our NICA family for a wonderful 2019 Montana Interscholastic Mountain Bike season and until next season...more cowbell!
