Listening in Turbulent Times

DiaPraxis e-mail newsletter • November 26, 2016

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

These are quite the times we are living in… As group facilitators, mediators, and process hosts, our art involves listening deeply to others. At the same time, as human beings, our responsibility includes listening to the voice of our own inner compass, and acting accordingly.

Navigating the creative tension between being an activist AND being a bridge-builder is a key part of my calling. Along with many of us, I've been feeling hugely stretched by what has been taking place here in the U.S. over the last few weeks. Of course, we each need to find our own balance and creative synergy between our roles and responsibilities as community members and as professionals. At the same time, there may be some benefit from witnessing one another's journeys in this regard..

This generative polarity between listening to different perspectives, and taking action on our principles, is an underlying theme of my latest blog post, "Celebrating Our Differences: Now More Than Ever". It's a long one, so here's the gist of it: In listening to the creative ferment that has been taking place in response to the U.S. elections, I've been hearing six different and complementary threads: honoring our emotions; reflecting and learning; organizing and taking action; the need for bridge-building, both within and across major divides; reconnecting with Spirit; and re-inventing democracy.

My essay explores all six threads, and is both an affirmation of, and a prayer for, the constructive social change that is being birthed in these challenging times. If it speaks to you, I'd love to hear any comments you may have in response...

These times are also calling each of us, to step more fully into the gifts that we bring. Those of you who want more practice in discovering common ground through deep listening to diverse perspectives, are warmly invited to sign up for the upcoming Dynamic Facilitation & Empathic Inquiry workshop in Maine in April. Do sign up now if you are interested… April will be here before we know it!

In the meantime, I am hosting online Empathy Circles every Friday at noon, eastern time. This is a space where we can explore whatever is on our minds and hearts, as we create a deep listening space together. (Edit: Our inaugural one will be on a Saturday, December 3.) Do contact me via e-mail if you'd like to participate.

With much love,

Rosa
