The feeling of having given it your all is empowering! (Click image to see more photos from largest NICA race ever held)

With the holidays upon us and the fall NICA league season wrapping-up, I have been reflecting on the amazing successes of those involved in helping make NICA the fastest growing youth cycling program in America. Over the past few months, I have been fortunate to spend time with NICA coaches, parents, volunteers, and current, past and aspiring student-athletes in many states across America. While the physical terrain, weather, and demographics vary widely across our participating regions, I can tell you confidently that the STOKE level amongst all involved is incredibly high!

Standing in the Utah League's State Championship race finish chute watching as 1,425 student-athletes completed their effort brought tears to my eyes. The raw emotion being expressed by those that had just given it their all and for a few who ran their broken bikes some distance to be received by screaming spectators, friends and family was intense. Irrespective of the finishing place, all NICA student-athletes were congratulated and respected for their efforts. No students sat on a bench as their teammates participated and spectators cheered for all riders even those from other teams. This situation was the same across all NICA leagues this fall and I look forward to witnessing similar scenes during the upcoming spring season which is getting underway now.

NICA is building communities across America that care for one another and who work together to allow every participating individual to contribute and play a meaningful role in a wide variety of ways that all help strengthen unity, compassion and sense of purpose. To help us expand our services and programs aimed at getting #MoreKidsOnBikes and #MoreCoachesOnBikes, I ask that you please consider becoming a NICA Sustainer during our Share the Ride Campaign. You may opt to contribute to a particular NICA league directly and/or donate to NICA National to fund the growth and expansion of our efforts. Those becoming NICA Sustainers will be entered into a drawing for an amazing bike trip with the incredible folks at Western Spirit Cycling Adventures and all that contribute at any level will be helping us continue towards achieving our mission of allowing every American teenager the opportunity to experience cycling under the mentorship of a trained coach.

In gratitude, Austin McInerny

BikeFlights presents NICA with a check for $2,500 at Interbike

Partner Recognition: BikeFlights has been a continuing supporter of NICA and the biking community for a number of years now, and we’re happy to see (and experience) that their Buck Up for Bikes program is coming along strong! The program helps raise money for NICA as well as the Amy D. Foundation, Little Bellas, and Trips for Kids.

Buck Up for Bikes is supported by customers who have the option upon checkout to donate $1 to one of the aforementioned nonprofit cycling organizations. then covers all the processing and administrative fees so that 100% of the donations go directly to their respective organizations.

In September, presented a total of $10,000 that was raised through the Buck Up for Bikes program for each respective organization. Since establishing the program in 2016, has raised $18,038! NICA has been appreciative of all the support from and it’s customers.

Austin McInerny, NICA’s executive director stated “I am grateful and proud of the way cyclists have come forward, from leaders like to casual riders, to support today’s youth and the future of cycling in the USA. Our ability to meet the growing demand for interscholastic cycling will be met in years to come by creative programs like Buck Up for Bikes. Outreach Efforts at the 2017 UCI Trek Cyclocross World Cup

NICA and the Wisconsin League joined forces with fellow non-profits, People for Bikes and IMBA, to represent the bicycle industry's advocacy leaders at the 2017 UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Waterloo, Wisconsin on September 22-24th. The four-pack teamed up on a fundraiser benefiting the Wisconsin League, featuring a series of raffle prizes and a SPIN to WIN wheel. Even Jens Voigt and Trek's CEO John Burke showed up to spin and win prizes! A brand new Trek Procaliber 8 mountain bike was the raffle grand prize with assorted Bontrager gear and swag provided throughout the weekend. The winning ticket belonging to Leif Ehrke was picked by the one and only Gary Fisher as the racing came to an end on Sunday evening.

Hannah mixing it up with the World's top racers!

A highlight of the weekend was cheering on SoCal League alumna, Hannah Rae Finchamp. Hannah was the SoCal Varsity Champ ('12, '13, and '14) and is now racing for Team CLIF Bar against the top pro cross racers in the world, including the World Champion Sanne Cant from Belgium. Read all about the women's super competitive race here and check-out the speed and grace of the Dutch & Belgian cross royalty here.

Even NICA President, Austin McInerny, got in on the Legend’s race action on a sweet loaner Trek Crockett bike and in vintage NICA Phys Ed Class ensemble to finish 9th in a 80+ strong field including Jens Voigt (sans costume), and Gary Fisher in full Roman gladiator gear! Post race, Austin reflected, "Starting directly behind Fisher and next to a Land Shark and Banana far back in the field made the chase into the top 10 a full effort. Thankfully, riding with NICA student-athletes keeps my game somewhat on!"

Trek Assembly Technician 101 Course

Image 2017-11-08 at 5.54.19 PM

Building on the wonderful experience had by those participating last summer, Trek is partnering again with NICA to offer a technician training course exclusive to NICA student-athletes at Trek’s headquarters in Waterloo, Wisconsin. This course will cover bike parts and assembly all the way up to safety check and test ride procedures.

This 3-day training course will allow NICA student-athletes to learn from masters with over 35+ years of experience, while also providing a unique, hands on experience for aspiring or amateur technicians. In addition to learning technical skills, attendees will be able to tour the Trek OCLV facilities and the Trek Test Lab.

"It was great and I learned a lot about basic bike maintenance and service. The class really helped my resume for shop applications, and I was able to land a job in a local bike shop the week after graduating." - Nico Johnson (SoCal League)

Trek trails will also be open and attendees will be provided with a bike during their stay. There are three opportunities to take this course:

▪ June 11 – 13, 2018: Co-ed student-athlete or coach
▪ July 9 – 11, 2018: Female only student-athlete or female coach
▪ July 23 – 25, 2018: Co-ed student-athlete or coach
