Executive Director's Note

With NICA celebrating its 7th birthday this month, it is a time to reflect on what has been achieved in a relatively short period while also asking what we hope to accomplish in the coming year. With nearly 11,000 student-athletes working with just over 4,000 licensed coaches across 19 state based regions presently, NICA has energized youth cycling in an unprecedented manner. While the growth so far is impressive, there is much more work to be undertaken to improve NICA’s programs and services in order to engage a more diverse population of students across America and to properly train and equip more adult coaches to effectively work within their communities to measurably strengthen the bodies, minds and character of the youth they mentor.

NICA celebrates 7th birthday!

Having just attended a Minnesota League race and NICA Board of Director’s meeting graciously hosted by Quality Bicycle Products, I heard many stories from participating families, coaches, bike shop owners and league sponsors confirming the power of interscholastic cycling to transform lives and communities. Recognizing this and believing in NICA, Trek Bicycles is increasing their support with a five year commitment to help our efforts to get #morekidsonbikes and we are thankful for this and for all the individuals and organizations who have contributed since NICA was launched in late 2009.

As you will see in this month’s newsletter, we are providing much more than just opportunities for adolescents to race their bikes and I hope that you will read the stories of NICA students, alumni and coaches that are making a significant impact in their communities both on and off the bike.

With sincere gratitude, Austin

2016 Participation Exceeds 10,000 Student-Athletes!

Since NICA was formed in 2009, we have seen explosive growth in both student-athlete and volunteer coach participation. Year over year, our numbers have sometimes doubled in certain states. During this fall season a milestone was reached with over 10,000 student-athletes participating in NICA programs, and a booming 3:1 ratio of student-athletes to coaches for 2016. Take a look at the full report Here.

October's Point of View: Wisconsin League

unnamed 17

Every few months we tell a story from within our NICA family that exemplifies the meaningful impact our programs have for all involved. We want to hear your stories!

Send us an email at content@nationalmtb.org with the subject: “Point of View”.

This month's story takes a different form. From time to time 'thank you' & 'testimonial' emails float around among the national office staff. These emails are typically sent directly to a league director and work there way up to our Executive Director, then shared with the rest of the office. This is where we find the majority of stories used for this series.

Instead of curating an internal email chain - we decided to copy and paste the raw emails to give you a look behind the scenes. Read More.

PeopleForBikes Launches #BikesCanSolveThat!

PeopleForBikes has recently launched a new storytelling campaign to raise awareness around different issues. Below you will find an excerpt from one of these stories.

When the kids are driving us batty by doing science experiments using peanut butter and the cat or burying their faces in a screen all day, it can be hard to remember that the days are long, but the years are short.

It seems like yesterday that we steadied their bikes with the full weight of a child’s trust on our fingertips. We ran alongside and watched with pride as they took off on their own two wheels. Read more of this story and others.

Partner Spotlight: Trek Bicycles

2016-10-19 0819

Trek stepped up to the plate in a major way when John Burke committed $1 million to NICA at Trek World this past August. The contribution will supplement their existing platinum level sponsorship, and be fulfilled over the next 5 years with the help of Trek retailers across the country. Trek has always been a big supporter of NICA, but now they've taken it to the next level!

The program is simple in concept; for every Bontrager mountain bike tire sold, Trek (and participating retailers) will each donate $1 to help further NICA's mission. You can read more about the official announcement here, but we want to take this time to personally recognize Trek for setting a precedent that we hope others will follow.

This fundraising program goes beyond the traditional sponsorship model by engaging both consumers and retailers to contribute a small amount towards getting #morekidsonbikes. A particular saying comes to mind, "a rising tide lifts all boats" and we encourage you to hop in the water and help us rise the tide over the next 5 years - and beyond!

Moving forward, Trek will be recognized as NICA's Lead Sponsor!
