NICA President Austin McInerny and VP of Development Kristine Urrutia at the Colorado League's Season Opener in Frisco, CO.

As another summer comes to a close, it means that another exciting season of NICA races is upon us! As of today, NICA student-athletes have already started their competitive seasons across Utah, Minnesota, Idaho, Nevada and Colorado. This past weekend, our VP of Development, Kristine Urrutia, NICA Board Member, Lisa Sher, and I had the privilege of attending the Colorado League’s first race of the season in Frisco and we thoroughly enjoyed the energy and excitement of the student-athletes, coaches, volunteers and families as Colorado kicked off their season. Speaking of volunteers - we greatly appreciate all the hard work our volunteers do to make these races happen! Race day volunteers cover tasks ranging from course setting, to marshaling and roaming during the races, to selling league merchandise and managing parking! I had the opportunity to volunteer as a sweep at the Colorado race and below, you’ll meet two NICA volunteers who are contributing to not only the success of their leagues, but helping improve our volunteer best practices nationwide.

With Oregon, West Virginia and Maryland having their inaugural races in September, Fall 2018 is lining up to be NICA’s largest season ever in terms of participation and number of races across the country. Between August 18 and November 4, there will be over 80 NICA races across 15 states; wow!

The growth and success of NICA leagues is also developing a strong alumni base as NICA graduates and current student-athletes alike filled the podium spots at the recent USA Cycling National Championships in Snowshoe, West Virginia, and a number of NICA alumni will be representing the United States September 5-9 in Lenzerheide, Switzerland at the UCI World Mountain Bike Championships. Congratulations and GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks for your continued support and involvement!
Sincerely, Austin

Fall Race Season Underway!

The Utah League's Central Region kicked off our Fall 2018 Race season on August 18th with over 1,000 student-athletes racing at Soldier Hollow. The weekend of August 25-26 saw nearly 8,000 student-athletes racing as the Nevada, Idaho, Minnesota and Colorado Leagues kicked off their seasons, as well as continued racing across Utah.

As NICA rolls into the Fall, Oregon, West Virginia and Maryland will host their inaugural races. NICA National Staff, as well as League Guild Members, will be traveling to each league to provide on the ground support and training. This is mountain bike interscholastic history for these new leagues, and also the culmination of 18 months of training and hard work. Join us in wishing Oregon, West Virginia, and Maryland congratulations on their inaugural races!

Training Ramps Up for NICA's Emergent Leagues

NICA's newest leagues, Montana, Florida and Indiana, are all looking forward to sending their leadership teams out to some Fall League races to experience NICA firsthand.

Also this Fall, NICA national staff will head out to Montana and Indiana to train their teams in venue selection. Whether racing in the desert of Arizona, the trees of upstate New York, the coast of North Carolina or Oregon, or any other league, all NICA courses must meet specific NICA venue and risk management guidelines to provide all participating student-athletes a safe, inclusive, quality and consistent experience across the country. We look forward to hearing more from our newest leagues and checking out their local trails and communities!
