The fourth race of the 2019 NICA season took place in Waukesha’s Minooka Park on Sunday.

This race met with a return to fall weather with temps topping out in the 40’s, 10-30 mph winds, and a few moments of sunshine. An overnight drizzle had little effect on the course and the cool conditions made it a great day to ride hard. 792 racers competed in 16 categories in the day’s mountain bike races. The course loop starts off with a medium size climb and some double track. Single track sections follow, with lots of turns and a few rock gardens. Then riders bomb back down the hill for a fast finish.

The spectators took to the county park with enthusiasm. Thunderous bells, Horns, and improvised percussion instruments of all kinds filled the air with each race start, and again in the woods with each passing racer.

Minooka, like other NICA venues, is a great spot for camping. Over 320 hearty souls spent the night at the trail head.

This race featured a GRiT pre-ride on Saturday at Noon. The program “Girls Ride Together” endeavors to get more girls on bikes and keep them connected through group activities. GRiT pre-rides will be offered at noon on Saturday for all the remaining races.

Student athletes have been sharpening their skills and building endurance all season long. With the first 4 in the books, the state championship looms on the horizon. The final race of the season will take place in 2 weeks at the Trek Trails in Waterloo.
