You are the Messiah

Three weeks ago we heard John’s gospel’s version of Peter’s confession of faith. This week we hear Mark’s version, when Peter says, “You are the Messiah.” In John, the stumbling block is Jesus’ invitation to eat his flesh, given for the life of the world. In Mark too the scandal has to do with Jesus’ words about his own coming death, and here Peter himself stumbles over Jesus’ words. But Jesus is anointed (the meaning of “messiah”) in Mark only on the way to the cross (14:3); so we are anointed in baptism with the sign of the cross.

September 16: How to be a good citizen of Lake Edge Lutheran This session will cover information that all LELC members need to know, or to know better: our Constitution and Bylaws; “The Wheel,” our obligations as members; and good meeting protocols. As an LELC member, you not only have a right to, but should, participate and speak up at meetings. This session is meant to give all of us more knowledge and more confidence to participate in the governance of our church. Some old hands with experience and knowledge will explicate our documents and lead discussion. We’ll have one more such session in October, in case all questions aren’t answered in September!

September 23: “Faces of Incarceration” Have you ever met someone who spent time in prison? “Faces of Incarceration: Changing the Narrative” is the theme of the portrait exhibit on display at LELC through September. Six paintings are here from the original 50 that were shown at the Overture Center in July 2017. Brief stories give a glimpse into the portrait subjects’ road back to community. It is an invitation to see the larger picture of their journey. Pat Dillon curated the original exhibit and wrote the stories after interviewing the individuals in the paintings. The paintings were done by numerous Madison artists. Bring your questions and comments to the discussion with former jail chaplain John Mix, one of the artists, will speak, as will one of the featured portrait subjects.

Rides to Worship Needed

van with people

Are you able to give someone a ride on Sunday Mornings? There are a few parishioners and visitors who would like to join us at Sunday worship but do not have transport. We would like to develop a list of possible drivers and their preferred service area. Call the church office and speak to the front desk volunteer to sign up, or email Chris at

- Play time volunteers (9:15-9:30 on Sundays)
- Nursery assistants (10:30 worship)

- Substitute teachers (9:30-10:20 on Sundays)
Help is also needed with behind-the-scenes work, such as periodically cleaning the toys that kids use, refreshing supplies in classrooms, etc.
If you are interested in helping with any of these volunteer opportunities, please be in touch with Pastor Katya (, Sam Lee ( or Ann Ahearn ( It takes a village to raise our children!
