The Ugly Duckling Who Went On to Become a Swan

All of you at some point in your life would have heard this story and in fact shared it with your siblings, children or employees.

I would like to share a real life very recent story of a woman (let us call her Shilpa), who with a little encouragement is today working with an MNC.

I met Shilpa when I was doing a series of trainings for an MNC on Personality Development. Whenever called to give a presentation or talk about something, she used to stammer, fidget, forget what she needed to say. During the breaks, however, whenever we used to chat, I found her to be extremely intelligent and a star performer during her school days. However, she shared, that on joining college, she used to be constantly ragged by friends about her looks, her behaviour, her mannerisms which created a huge inferiority complex in her.

Shilpa's confidence dropped so much that her study scores became dangerously low. She just about managed to clear college and hence was unable to get a good campus placement. Having seen the potential in her, I started appreciating her, making her challenge her perceptions about herself and giving her positive strokes. I started seeing the change in her immediately and with every programme she started getting more confident.

After we completed the series of programmes, during the assessment, her Company shared with me that she topped the list.

The thought I want to leave here is, as Leaders, one of our primary roles is to find the potential in others - personally or professionally.

How many of us take time out to say a good word to someone during the day ?

If we dont have a good word, at least lets not spoil another's day by a bad word. Ugly ducklings get created by our thoughtless, meaningless, moody bad words!!

Do this exercise with yourself today and check out how many 'thank yous', 'pleases', 'hey thats great' do we make the effort to say.

A Leader is one who has the potential to convert an ugly duckling into a swan.
Look around and see if there is someone who is hungry for a pat on the back, a good word, a smile - lets go out there and make someone's day, everyday.

The feeling we get in return is beyond description.

Appreciation

An artist asked the gallery owner if there had been any interest in his paintings on display at that time.

“I have good news and bad news,” the owner replied. “The good news is that a gentleman enquired about your work and wondered if it would appreciate in value after your death. When I told him it would, he bought all 15 of your paintings”.

That’s wonderful,” the artist exclaimed. “What’s the bad news?”

“The guy was your doctor….”
