Back on (Single) Track

Dear Riders,

This week, leaders around the state attended a Positive Coaching Alliance workshop on developing a positive coaching culture in which students of all abilities and performance levels can thrive and grow as athletes and as people.

Our culture is what makes us different from other youth sports. We value competition and winning, but we're about so much more than that. We're a youth-development organization, and mountain biking is the vehicle for all the life lessons that can be learned from sports. Every decision we make—at the national, league, team, and individual level—should align with the following shared principles:

MISSION: We build strong minds, bodies, character, and communities through cycling.

VISION: Every youth is empowered to be part of a thriving and engaged cycling community.

VALUES: Fun, Inclusivity, Equity, Respect, and Community.

We don't think of ourselves as a racing organization, but rather a mountain-bike community. Racing is a celebrated part of our culture, but anyone who sees winning as our primary objective is missing the point. As we've said before, a bicycle is a vehicle for so much more than a ride.

In this and future newsletters, we'd like to profile "Roll Models" whose attitude and actions exemplify one of our core values. If you know of someone we should feature, please let us know! To nominate a Roll Model, email kim@idahomtb.org.

Ride on!

Race Season Updates

* We'll be returning to regular mass-start races this fall. (As in the past, the first race of the season will be a time trial for all middle school racers and then mass start races the rest of the season.)

* Race registration will open July 1. Look for a special announcement in late June.

* Each team will attend five of the six races. All teams attend the first and last race. Check with your team director to find out which race your team is skipping.

* The IICL rule book is under revision and will be available in July.

* Important rule changes: Several rule changes have been approved by our Rules Committee based on feedback from team directors and head coaches. Rule changes will impact category placement for high school racers and the way in which the State Champion is determined. Questions? Ask your team director.

ROLL MODEL: Darcie Bushee

Darcie Bushee

Meet Darcie Bushee, a member of Timberline High School's Class of 2021. When she joined the mountain-bike team in 2017 as a freshman, she didn't even own a bike. A true beginner, she had trouble riding down the trail in a straight line, according to coach Dru Nakaya, who recalled that at first she was "wobbly and a little scared—but she loved it!"

Two years later, Darcie was wearing the Leader's Jersey—and earning top grades.

Always smiling, always positive, she grew into a natural leader on her team. Now, as she graduates and prepares to study aeronautical engineering at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Darcie has realized NICA's mission of building strong minds, bodies, character and community through cycling.

This month, Darcie was named one of four recipients of the Sparkle On Scholarship, which recognizes graduating NICA student-athletes who have demonstrated academic and athletic excellence and who plan to attend college and continue racing mountain bikes. Each recipient will receive a monetary award of $10,000, a SCOTT mountain bike, mentoring from NICA alum and 2018 UCI XC mountain bike champion, Kate Courtney during the first year of college, and career mentoring through SRAM.

"Taking scrapes, bruises, and crashes on the trail is much like approaching the trials of life," Darcie says. "Mountain biking has shown me that even when I fall I have to recover, continue to train, and continue to compete and this mindset that mountain biking has instilled in me will help me throughout the rest of my life."

We asked Darcie what advice she would share with riders new to mountain biking. Here's what she said:

"Approach the sport as if you always have something to learn and never something to prove."

Darcie, you make us all proud! Best of luck in your racing and college career. We can't wait to see the next generation of "roll models" to follow in your singletrack.
