LMNG&F 6th Annual Ladies Derby: My First Derby Experience Will NOT Be My Last!

by Revy
With two young kids, most years I stand on the shore and take pictures as the girls set sail for the annual Ladies Fishing Derby or I get to see pictures or hear about the tales at the after derby celebration, but I have never been able to take part in the derby myself. As the kids are getting bigger, this year I was able to enter the derby and try my luck. I was nervous to join because I had no boat and no idea what I was doing but the Lake Manitoba Game and Fish sought out people with boats and know how to help people like me that just want to get out and try. I had the pleasure of being on Clancy Solomon's boat. Not only is he an avid fisherman but a great teacher, and he was so helpful and patient with me. He showed me various techniques, rods, tackle and within no time I caught myself a beautiful 6.4 lbs drum. It was my first of 7 fish that we caught together throughout the day and my biggest one, and got me on the leader board in first for a bit. When the derby was completed the drum and I landed in 3rd place, which I was thrilled with seeing as it was my first fishing derby. It was a great day and a wonderful event with fantastic silent auction prizes and supper as well. As I was fishing I kept thinking how this was a wonderful event to host in the community because there is not a lot of ladies only events like this in Manitoba. It gave someone like me a taste of fishing in Manitoba in a relaxed and fun environment and after that day, well let's just say I am "hooked!"
