Ride for the Fallen Details

Our next "Big Event" is on Memorial Day. We are doing a "Ride for the Fallen" in tandem with the annual "Run for the Fallen" which is a week long event". We would appreciate your help in getting the word out to your friends, family and the organizations in which you are associated.

Olivia Goulding, the "Run for the Fallen" event founder for our area, and I have discussed the desire and need for a "Ride for the Fallen" for those who wanted to use their bicycles to honor and remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. From that discussion came the idea that follows. We both realized the fact that bike riding on the Veteran's Memorial Trail around the ISU Stadium posed a risk for the runners and walkers. Consequently the "tandem" concept was born.

Our ride on Memorial Day will provide an opportunity for individuals and families to use their bikes to Honor and Remember all those who have given their lives for our Freedom.

Our Bike route on May 25th will start in the Veterans Memorial Park at 10:00 am. We will gather together and take one lap around the trail where nearly 7,000 flags will be placed honoring all those who were killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. We will then head to the Heritage Trail, just North of the Stadium and ride to the Highland Lawn Cemetery for a short Memorial Day program.

Immediately following, we will be given a Police escort down to Fowler Park were we will gather around the flagpole at the park's entrance. This year is a special year. It marks the 50th anniversary of Army Captain Eugene Russell Fowler's death. The Park was named after Captain Fowler, who was the first man from Vigo County to be killed in Vietnam. We will stand around the pole and raise an American Flag that was flown over the US Capitol in his memory.

Then, we will all ride to the barn in the Pioneer Village of the Park for lunch provided by Frontier Communications. Please RSVP to Friends@GriffinBikePark.com to help us determine the amount of food needed.
