Race day in Montana

Wow! There are many words to describe the energy and excitement of a NICA race (as many of you well know) but I am truly “wowed” after having the privilege of attending the Montana League’s inaugural race this past weekend in Bozeman. What we’re doing, what you’re doing - is special. We’re not just putting on bike races for kids, we’re creating communities where our youth can flourish, where entire families are involved and where what happens on the bike influences behaviors off the bike as well. I was excited to see a high number of female student-athletes participating in the Montana league - over 30% of Montana’s student-athletes are female. The high rate of female student-athlete involvement happens because many of Montana’s coaches and volunteers are female and they have a strong community supporting NICA’s mission to get #moregirlsonbikes.

Montana is the newest member of our growing community of 27 leagues across the country, and while I was cheering on student-athletes in Bozeman, there were student-athletes racing in Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Minnesota and Nevada, Pennsylvania’s student-athletes were participating in adventure activities and coaches were receiving training in NorCal and Florida. And the Fall season is just kicking off! Earlier this month we hit a major milestone, with over 20,000 registered student-athletes for the 2019 season, and I am also excited to announce that 20.6% of those registered student-athletes are female.

NICA is in a strong position to keep moving the needle and turn youth mountain biking into a national movement. I sat down a few weeks ago with Kristin Carpenter from Verde Brand Communications to discuss the state of NICA and growing our community in her Channel Mastery Podcast. You can listen to it HERE. We’ve done a great job getting to where we are, and I am excited to keep the momentum going and work with all of you to continue to get #morekidsonbikes!

Best regards,

Fall Season Underway

The Utah League kicked off the 2019 Fall NICA Season on August 13th at Soldier Hollow with over 1,300 student-athletes racing! Racing contined across the country last weekend with Colorado, Idaho, Minnesota, and Nevada kicking off their seasons, and Montana hosting their inaugural race! The Pennsylvania League also hosted an adventure weekend. We're looking forward to the coming weeks when all 17 of our Fall leagues are out racing and having adventures! Summer Camps Snapshot

School may be back in session but we are still stoked on all the awesome summer camp activities from this summer. From Bikepacking to GRiT to Teen Trail Corps, fourteen summer camps were hosted by nine NICA Leagues!

Check out some of the fun and educational programs that NICA student-athletes had the opportunity to experience this summer.

Oregon Bikepacking Camp The Oregon League put on NICA’s first Bikepacking camp this summer with a crew of 18 middle and high school riders on the Oregon Timber Trail.

GRiT Camps The West Virginia, Idaho and Pennsylvania Leagues hosted Girls Riding Together (GRiT) camps for female student-athletes to learn new skills, have adventures and make new friends! These camps were open to all NICA female student-athletes and provided a fun opportunity for student-athletes from different leagues to connect.

Teen Trail Corps Camps The Pennsylvania League and the NorCal League hosted camps where student-athletes participated in trail stewardship activities. At Pennsylvania's camp, 19 student-athletes earned their Teen Trail Corps Captain badge and student-athletes participating in the NorCal League's camp had the opportunity to earn college credit for their work!

Collegiate Cycling Clubs Provide Opportunities for NICA Alumni

Part of NICA’s mission is to not just get #morekidsonbikes but to build strong cycling communities and create lifelong cyclists. While NICA programs are designed for student-athletes in grades 6-12, there are many post-secondary cycling opportunities for all NICA alumni. There are an increasing number of universities and colleges across the country that offer varsity programs for competitive elite athletes, many of which are well-known in the cycling community. What may not be as well known, is that even more universities and colleges offer cycling as a club sport, where students can continue to participate in a cycling team, but not necessarily race and train at an elite level.

We recently caught up with SoCal League alumna, Sidra Aghababian, who now is riding with Colorado State University Cycling - a Collegiate Club Team, and wants to help spread the word to other NICA alumni and current-student athletes who want to continue cycling through college. Check out the scoop HERE on Colorado State University’s team, as well as how collegiate cycling clubs are a great opportunity for NICA alumni looking to continue their involvement with cycling.

Help us show NICA’s impact!

You know how much impact mountain biking has on your community, now we need your input to show the data behind the impact! We are continuing our partnership with PeopleforBikes to study the economic impact NICA Events have on the communities that host them. Please take 5 minutes after each race weekend to complete the following SURVEY about the weekend’s event. Your participation is greatly appreciated and is providing your league valuable data to help promote mountain biking in your community!

Trek Mountain Bikes and Bontrager Tires help get #morekidsonbikes!

Trek and its retail partners make up the largest annual contribution to NICA. For every Trek full suspension mountain bike sold, Trek donates $10 directly to NICA—and many Trek retailers are stepping up to match this contribution. For every Bontrager mountain bike tire sold, Trek donates $1 directly to NICA as well. The funds from these two promotions support every NICA league at the local level and provides start-up funding for new leagues. Visit your local Trek retailer or click HERE to learn more about how riding Trek helps get more kids on bikes!
