Day Four - Virtual Southern Side by Side Classic

LIZ 1924

Kirby with a side by side shooting driven birds in Wales '14.

Meet a Vendor & Watch an Interview about "Why Vintage Guns are a Good Bang for your Buck!"

Kirby Hoyt's tables of guns always seem to be a congregation point at any show, but especially at The Southern. And he always seems to have something for everyone, whether it be a workhorse boxlock or a pair of Boss sidelever hammer guns (or some red wine). His knowledge of guns is encyclopedic, and he shares what he knows. As you can see from his website, Vintage Doubles keeps an impressive cross-section of vintage guns in stock, including double rifles, hammer guns and hammerless guns, drillings, and more. Kirby is offering free shipping for any gun purchased during The Virtual Southern.

Meet a Vendor

Ever wonder why it takes so long to break in a new pair of hunting boots? It is probably because they don't actually fit that well, and your foot needs to change the fit with time, and sometimes with a little pain! Russell Moccasin takes a different approach by building your boots or shoes to actually fit you right out of the box, and the choices of options and models is impressive. They have a DIY measurement system, or you can get custom fit at one of the many shows they attend. Here is a link to a short video about the history of the company and their custom shoemaking processes. Sean loves his boots from them!

William Larkin Moore & Sons constantly strives to find the best guns and gun values available for their customers. In addition to handling custom orders from some of the world’s best makers, they try hard to maintain a substantial inventory of both new and fine pre-owned doubles and all manner of high grade and collectable guns.

Meet a Vendor - Joseph's Vintage Guns

Joseph’s Vintage Guns is located in Richmond, Texas, just outside of Houston.
Its home is in a 1900’s building where Michael Joseph’s grandfather had his
General Mercantile beginning in 1917. Michael is the 4th generation
of Joseph merchants in Richmond, TX.

The building is quaint with the smell of old leather and a variety of animal mounts decorating the walls and shelves. There is a separate vault that houses a collection of vintage side-by-side shotguns and double rifles and a few pre-war German drillings. In addition to vintage guns, Joseph’s carries clothing, accessories, gifts and British campaign furniture. So, if you need to get outfitted for bird-shooting in the UK or a traditional African safari, the staff at Joseph’s can help you select items that best suit your style and needs.

Meet The Press

Covey Rise Magazine has built an impressive publication since its inception. It really captures the essence of the upland sporting lifestyle and is carefully crafted with extraordinary words and images. In the pages of this magazine, you will find distinctive stories that feature hunting traditions, fine shotguns, sporting destinations, bird dogs, conservation, wild-game chefs, and more. Their mission is to deliver readers into the heart of the upland experience with each and every issue. Check out this recent article on the building of a best gun. Terry Allen's pictures are superb, you can almost smell the walnut and gun oil.

Shooting Sportsman is a staple in most of our homes. With thoughtful review on guns, dog training, shooting venues, and personalities, it is irreplaceable. While much of The Southern focuses on vintage guns, check out this recent article on the modern AyA No. 2 Round Action by Bruce Buck.

We are big fans of Fieldsports, although it is hard to get here in the States. Wonderful writing, spectacular photography, and just a substantial publication that comes every other month. Check out this article on Double Rifles for a start, and then give this one a read, all about The MacNab Challenge.

The Double Gun Journal is all about vintage guns. Full stop. The reality is that this is where many of us got the bug. Great writing about great guns, presented in a format that you can't help but collect.

Take a photo of your score card with your phone to show us your best score of a round of 50 clays. Email the photo to us by 5:00pm on Sunday, April 26th. We will announce a winner in each category. 12 gauge and 20 gauge in both over under and side by side (any sub-gauge can enter in the 20 gauge event). There will be four winners and each winner will receive a free subscription to Covey Rise Magazine or Shooting Sportsman. Kids prize to be determined. In the event of a tie, we will pull a name out of a hat! Feel free to invite your friends to compete!
