Welcome to the Newsletter

It's been a busy time for me since the last newsletter.

I turned in ARCHANGEL'S WAR. I've been living and breathing the Guild Hunter world for months and I believe this is the most powerful book in the series so far. It's also the longest by a significant margin. There was no way I could compress a story this big.

Since the entire book is a spoiler for basically everything, I'm not sure how we'll pick excerpts. So many moments I think you should experience first hand during the story, so many things I can't wait for you to turn the page and discover.

I also recently received the copy edited manuscript of A MADNESS OF SUNSHINE for review. I enjoyed reading my debut thriller again after having turned it in a while ago, and I'm so excited for you to read it, and to meet the cast of characters that inhabit a remote town on the edge of New Zealand's West Coast. Bad things are happening...and they know it has to be one of them.

I've spent the past week organizing myself for the rest of the year, and especially for the June release of WOLF RAIN!! I loved returning to SnowDancer territory with Memory and Alexei. Their story is emotional and sexy, light and dark at the same time. I've got some fun quotes from the book below.

Also in this newsletter is a deleted scene from an earlier book, a couple of reading recommendations, information about a 2020 appearance in Australia, international covers and more.

Happy reading!
Nalini

Book Recommendations

Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev

Given my love for all things Austen, I was always going to read this book, so when Sonali offered me an early copy, I jumped on the chance. It kept me up till 3am and I have no regrets.

The hero and heroine are passionate and complicated and at times I wanted to shake them, but through it all, I was compelled to know how it would all turn out. There is so much pent-up emotion between them and when it explodes, everything goes boom.

I also found the powerful Raje family fascinating - so many layers and secrets and hurts, but beneath it all is an unbreakable bond that had me itching for all the other characters' stories too.

Also, I have to say, Sonali's Wickham is creepily dastardly, and I wanted to warn everyone else anytime she (yes, she) was on the page.

This book releases today and I highly recommend you check it out. Happy release day, Sonali!

Alyssa Cole Can t Escape Love

Can't Escape Love by Alyssa Cole

I was looking for a new audiobook when this novella popped up in my feed, and it sounded so cute that I had to give it a go.

I'm here to tell you that it is as cute as it sounds. It begins with the heroine, Reggie, tracking down a livestreamer (Gus) whose voice she needs to fall asleep (he's gone AWOL and all his recorded streams have disappeared).

It turns out that Gus is building an escape room based around an anime about which he knows nothing...and on which Reggie is an expert. They make a trade - he'll share his voice, and she'll share her knowledge.

And the cuteness begins.

The entire story is focused on Reggie and Gus and their development from internet friends to real life lovers, and even though this was a short listen* as it was a novella, I had a grin on my face by the end and really believed that they'd found their perfect match. Very happily recommended. :)

*This novella is also available in print and as an ebook.

Wonder and Freedom

"In paranormal romance, though I may tell stories in the context of shapeshifters and telepaths, archangels and vampires, the questions can be very much human. The nature of cruelty, and of love, the value of loyalty, and the pain of betrayal."

The above is a short quote from my recent post on Fantasy Book Cafe. I wrote it as part of their Women in SF&F Month, and it focuses on what draws me to paranormal romance and other speculative fiction. I hope you enjoy reading it.

Deleted Scene from SHIELD OF WINTER

by Nalini Singh

Author's Note: I was looking for something to put in the newsletter and found this deleted scene featuring a baby Naya. Our favorite tiny panther and her parents have a role to play in WOLF RAIN, so you'll see them again in June, but for now, I hope you enjoy this little bite!

“Oh, I miss Naya.”

“You’ve only been away from her for a few hours.”

Sascha was on to him. “Stop pretending you don’t miss her, too. I seem to recall someone asking me to drive into the city so he could cuddle his baby before a meeting.”

“It was going to be a long meeting,” Lucas protested.

“Do you think we’re spoiling her?” Sascha was suddenly worried. “I wasn’t raised in a maternal way, and I’m trying so hard to give Naya everything, and you’re so protective—what if we’re overdoing it?”

Lucas shot her an affectionate look, his gaze full of tenderness. “She’ll be fine, Sascha darling. Even if we mess up, the rest of the pack will make sure to haul us back on the right path.”

He was proven right minutes later, when they arrived at Tamsyn’s home to find their baby laughing uproariously as two tiny leopard cubs--claws extended--threatened to pounce on her.

The only reason Sascha hadn’t screamed at the first sight of sharp leopard teeth near Naya’s delicate skin was that she knew Roman and Julian would never hurt the baby. They were babies themselves, but they already had a very strong protective streak, would often play with Naya for hours when they visited with her and Lucas.

“Don’t worry,” Tamsyn whispered in her ear as Lucas went over to grab Julian by the scuff of his neck, growling deep in his chest. “I kept an eye on them the entire time.”

The cub growled back at Lucas, and the “fight” was on, Lucas staying in human form as the twins pounced and Naya laughed.

Sascha made a face, laying her head against the healer’s shoulder. “I was just saying to Lucas how we’re probably too overprotective. It’s good for her to play like this.”

“Trust me, you won't have a problem there.” Tamsyn tugged on her braid. “As soon as she’s able to shift, you won’t be able to keep her in one place.” A one-armed hug. “Come into the kitchen. I made your favorite cookies.”
