5th Annual Library Crawl

The Illinois Heartland Library System's 5th annual Library Crawl is taking place throughout the whole month of October. The Crawl is a great way to get to know your local libraries and see what they offer! Want to participate? Start by picking up the official Library Crawl passport at Allerton Public Library. Then, travel around central and southern Illinois to visit the participating locations! Get your passport stamped at the front desk of each library you visit. When you get five stamps, bring in your passport to get a reward from us!

Check out this guidebook to all the towns participating in the crawl.

Did you know that you can check out books from libraries all across central and southern Illinois, then return them to us? You have access to tens of thousands of books, movies, video games, and more! Join the Crawl to discover all that's available to you within the Illinois Heartland Library System.

Piatt County Toy and Gift Program Applications Available at the Library

The nonprofit organization Piatt County Toy and Gift Program is accepting applications for this holiday season. Applications are available to pick up at the front desk of the library. You can also download an application on our website.

Brick Builders Lego Club

This after school club runs every Monday afternoon through December. Every week we'll offer a new challenge to kids who love to build with Legos! No registration required. Recommended for kids age 6+.

Stress Management Workshop

On Tuesday, October 3rd at 2:00 PM, Piatt County Mental Health Center is presenting a stress management workshop for all ages. One of their licensed Mental Health professionals will teach us about the science of stress as well as provide coping techniques and self-care tips.

Illinois Libraries Presents: Stephen Graham Jones

APLD joins more than 200 Illinois libraries participating in Season 3 of Illinois Libraries Present, a collaborative effort featuring virtual events with bestselling and award-winning authors and esteemed speakers. The season continues with Stephen Graham Jones, a New York Times bestselling author in the horror genre and National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) fellowship recipient. His interview will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, October 4, at 7 PM. Register here.

Lap Time

Lap Time takes place every Wednesday morning at 9:30. This is a 30 minute program for babies to sing, move, listen to stories, and play!

Story Time

Story Time runs every Thursday at 10:00 AM. Story time is a half hour filled with books, songs, instruments, and play.

Play Time

Play Time is on Friday mornings from 10:00 -12:00. Join us for free play in the program room and socialize with other families!

The Life of Elvis Presley

Historical presenter Jim Gibbons will share how Elvis started in the music industry with Sun Records, and progressed to one of the most well-known names of all time. He'll also cover Presley's acting career and military service. This event is taking place on Friday, October 6th at 2:00 PM!

Bingo

Bingo is taking place on Monday, October 9th at 2:00 PM!

Illinois Libraries Presents: Food, Family, and Folktales: A Conversation with Grace Lin

Acclaimed author Grace Lin will discuss why she writes books for the youngest readers through middle graders and how she illustrates them. She'll also show us her latest book, Chinese Menu: The History, Myths, and Legends Behind Your Favorite Foods, and will lead an interactive drawing activity. Register on Zoom.

Crafternoon

Get ready to unleash your creativity and have a blast with fellow craft enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned crafter or just starting out, this event is perfect for everyone. We'll provide all the necessary materials and guidance to help you create a beautiful and unique Thanksgiving luminary vase! Register for Crafternoon on Eventbrite.

Learn Together, Grow Together Book Group

Our nonfiction book group has chosen Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival and Hope in New York City by Andrea Elliot as October's book. Join us on Thursday, October 19th at 6:00 PM to discuss this memoir!

Super Saturday

Families with kids of all ages are invited to decorate a trick or treat bag for Halloween on Saturday, October 21st at 10:00 AM!

Read, Watch, Discuss Book Group

This month's title is The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin. Join us on Tuesday, October 24th at 10:00 AM to watch the movie and discuss!

Dementia Care with Kirby Senior Life Solutions

Kirby Medical Center's Senior Life Solutions will give another health presentation at the library; this month's topic is dementia. Join us on Wednesday, October 25th at 2:00 PM to learn more.

Safe Trick or Treat and Scavenger Hunt

The Monticello Chamber's annual Safe Trick or Treat is taking place on Friday, October 27th from 4:00-6:30 PM. The library will pass out candy provided by the Monticello Rotary. We'll also have a scavenger hunt! Everyone who completes the scavenger hunt will take home a free book. Safe Trick or Treat is open to all ages.

Coming Soon

Lucky Day Book Section

The library is adding a new section of our most popular books for adults. The books that you can never find on our shelves--because they're always checked out! With a 7 day loan period (rather than the standard 3 week loan period), these books will come back into the library faster, so you can borrow them sooner. Keep your eye out for this new section, coming soon!

November Highlights

Monticello High School Madrigals Performance

The MHS Madrigals are performing a half hour Renaissance program on Wednesday, November 1st at 4:00 PM. All ages are welcome to attend!

The Illinois Terminal in Monticello

Illinois Traction Society historian Dale Jenkins will present the history of the Illinois Terminal railroad in our town on Thursday, November 2nd at 2:00 PM.

Super Saturday

On Saturday, November 11th at 10:00 AM, we're inviting your kids' stuffed animals over for a sleepover! Bring your animal friends to Super Saturday to make them a special name tag and a homemade fuzzy sleeping bag. Then leave them at the library to have fun! We'll share updates of the sleepover activities all afternoon and evening on social media. And when you come back to pick up your friends, they'll have a scrapbook full of memories to share with you!
