In times of uncertainty it's natural to feel helpless, but our fellow sewers are uniquely poised to help. Join us in the #millionmaskchallenge and put your skills to work in the crisis that has engulfed the world over. As a community, we can aid the many selfless doctors, nurses, and other health care providers in their fight against Covid-19. We are donating fabric to Unshattered, a local non-profit organization that has mobilized their efforts from making bags to making masks for a local hospital here in New York. If you'd like to help, we've rounded up some mask tutorials below. If you haven't already found an outlet to donate to, we recommend contacting your local hospital for their needs, or follow Million Masks Challenge on Instagram as they post places accepting donations. Finally, our shop is still up and running since we are not open to the public and operate as a "warehouse/distribution and fulfillment" place of business, as well as a manufacturer. So for now it seems we are exempt from closing our doors. Our small staff is taking great care to adjust, working in shifts, practicing social distancing and following other guidelines in order to preserve our health and keep your fabric stash full and your hands busy. We hope our newsletter continues to be a bright spot in your day and a source for creative inspiration. |

We realize that these are not meant to replace N95 medical masks, but we understand that homemade masks can be worn over official masks in order to prolong the life of a mask. Moreover, handmade masks can replace a regular surgical mask when possible to ensure that as many official medical masks go to the doctors that need them most. Many sewers have shared tutorials and guidance on how to make the masks and here are just a few to get you started. |

Sweet Red Poppy has amazingly put together three tutorials for three different types of masks; those with bias tape, those with elastic, and those that are fitted. Made Everyday even has a tutorial for making masks with knit fabric for the ties. If you are deciding which type to make, it might be best to reach out to your local hospital, or wherever you may be donating your masks, to see which type they prefer, or if they have any other specifications to follow. |
