Last week we noted a turning point, with infrastructure front and center in so many places, and direct action gaining traction. This week, that trend kicks into high gear, with actions literally every day of the week in multiple locations. Jump in!

For as long as it takes

So, there's this thing: We refer to it as the "Marvel Comics Evil Genius Plan for World Destruction." The idea is: you take an unstable depleted salt cavern and you fill it with explosive compressed gases, next to a body of water that's the aquifer for 100,000 people. Then add compressor stations and a rail yard and noisy polluting industry into an idyllic setting of farms and wineries. Pretty evil, huh? But wait––this is NOT a Lex Luthor plot line. The bad guy is a company called Crestwood, and this is for real. But guess what? So is the calm resolve of the local opponents. Last week, ten citizens, including biologist, Sandra Steingraber, were arrested after several days of blockading the entrance to Crestwood's facility on Lake Seneca. They're not going away, not until Crestwood does, and if you want to join them, sign up here. You can also donate to the jail fund.

Monday, Nov. 3rd, all day, and all week, in DC:

FERC shady

FERC doesn't work, therefore, FERC shouldn't be allowed to get to work!

Sane Energy Project and the NYC Grassroots Alliance is traveling to Washington, DC to join the Beyond Extreme Energy week of action at FERC (The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission). On Monday, we'll lead a flash mob to POINT THE FINGER AT FERC, wearing custom tees and dark glasses, because FERC IS A SHADY BUSINESS! Every day this week, from Monday to Friday, activists will block the entrance to FERC's office building. There are only 2 seats left on the bus, sign up here ASAP!

Wednesday, Nov. 5th, morning and afternoon, in NYC

FERC meme N5

What with activists descending on DC to blockade their building for a week straight, FERC Commissioners must have wanted to get outta town so bad they scheduled a meeting in New York––with the PSC (Public Service Commission)––to discuss the future of energy in our state. Since it's obvious what FERC thinks the future of energy ought to be (a pipeline and compressor station in every backyard!) we'll greet conference goers as they arrive and exit to explain what WE think the future of energy ought to be (offshore wind and solar panels). Please join the action for the morning rally (7:30-9:30am) and/or the afternoon rally (2:30-4:30pm). All the details here and SPREAD THE WORD! New York Institute of Technology Auditorium, 1871 Broadway, between 61st and 62nd Streets.

Thursday, Nov. 6th: Protest at WNYC

NPR

Tell WNYC: Fracking? Don't Even "Think About It"!
Do you listen to NPR shows on WNYC–– Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, All Things Considered, Weekend Edition? Then you've probably heard the "Think About It" ads from the American Natural Gas Association (ANGA). Here's an example. The folks at Environmental Action are staging an action at NPR national headquarters in DC as part of Beyond Extreme Energy week, and we're going to stage a solidarity action at WNYC. The station is at 160 Varick Street at Vandam (one block north of Spring Street). Please note: An exact time still TBD, but will be after 1pm. If you'd like to be a part of it, please email: palmonrode@gmail.com, with "WNYC" as subject line.

Friday, Nov. 7th, 6-9pm, in Long Beach:

Come to an in-person informational and organizing meeting-slash-art build and learn about Port Ambrose LNG (Liquified Natural Gas). We'll discuss the conflict between this LNG facility and a proposed wind farm, decide on a community response, and paint some banners and lawn signs to help get the word out. NO ARTISTIC TALENT REQUIRED! (Just a sense of urgency!) Light refreshments served; bring a dish to share if you like! Spread the word on facebook; share the event page. The Mermaid Art Studio, 891B West Beech Street, Long Beach, New York 11561 Map here.

Sane Energy Project will be the guest speakers in the fourth of a series of talks on climate. The presentation is titled, "New York's Energy Future: Shale Gas or Wind Farms," and provides an overview of issues with infrastructure, using the You Are Here map, versus renewable solutions. Westchester Society for Ethical Culture, 7 Saxon Woods Road, White Plains, NY 10605, Near the Mamaroneck station, New Haven line of Metro North

Saturday, Nov. 15th: Collateral Damage in Ithaca

The Coalition to Protect Communities from Fracking’s Collateral Damage formed in 2014 in the wake of the court decision upholding the rights of NYS communities to ban fracking. As their website states, collateral damage includes: Waste disposal; Infrastructure for transporting and storing gas–pipelines, compressor stations, export facilities, underground storage; Air pollution, road use, and rail transport. In other words, what our infrastructure map illustrates is already happening. So we are pleased to know that the day-long forum will include a demonstration of the YOU ARE HERE infrastructure map by Ithaca-area contributor Maura Stephens. November 15th at Ithaca College, Textor Hall, 9am-5pm. Full conference agenda here.

Saturday, Nov. 15th in NYC @7:30pm: Steingraber

sandra arsest

Hydrofracking, the State of our State, and the Witness of Civil Disobedience. Sandra Steingraber is a biologist, a poet and a tireless activist. She is also a Quaker, and will speak at the Friend's Meeting House about her recent experiences. Having called out fracking as "the deadly enabler that keeps the whole fossil fuel party going far past the time of its curfew," Sandra will surely make vivid the costs of extreme extraction. Sandra will testify to her own journey toward civil disobedience and the continuing blockade against planned gas storage in abandoned salt caverns near Seneca Lake.

Dominion Project still needs your comments!

Dom FERC hearing

The Dominion New Market Project threatens to make a Minisink out of six other towns across a 200-mile swatch of New York State. Last week we reported on the raucous public hearing that drew the scorn of residents. Read the whole story here. But comments are still needed: Click here for instructions on how to file the below demands as comments to FERC.

1. Call for a 90-day extension of the scoping comment period. The previously announced deadline of October 20th was laughably short.
2. Scoping meetings must be held in each community that Dominion’s proposal impacts. Holding meetings in only one location for a proposed project that spans 200 miles is simply absurd. The public has a right to participate and be provided reasonable access.
3. It is unacceptable to substitute an Environmental Assessment for an Environmental Impact Statement on a project of this magnitude. The public demands a full EIS to thoroughly examine all impacts and alternatives.

Vote for YOU ARE HERE!

Now that we've unveiled YOU ARE HERE, our map of fracking infrastructure across New York State, we are trying to spread the word. We could win a $10,000 grant to take the map on tour, but WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please vote here for our project, and tell every group or email list you're a part of to vote for our project as well. With your help we can bring the map to towns all over the state!

Thanks for reading all the way til the end! ; )
