Introducing a New Product Line from Cape May NJ

NOW ON SALE through September 5, Save a dollar when you buy any 2 jar combination of Jersey Girl Pickles, Holy Camoly Hot Sauce or Jersey Jam spread. We found these wonderful small batch products on a recent trip to Cape May NJ and knew right away our customers would love these local products.

Jersey Girl Pickles are made with homegrown cucumbers and pickled with fresh ingredients using an old family recipe &come in 3 varieties Spicy, Bread & Butter and Garlic

Jersey Jam Tomato jam is one of those new old things that once was a condiment staple on the dining tables of American vegetable farmers in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Perhaps they came up with the idea near summer's end - when tomatoes were often in overabundance and farm families grew tired of canning whole tomatoes in jars, and they didn't need another bottle of ketchup on their shelf to make it through winter. So they took tomatoes, added an equal amount of sugar, stewed the mixture for hours, and then jarred it in the manner of making strawberry preserves. In their farm kitchens, they produced a delicacy some have called a cross between marmalade and ketchup that they could put on everything from breakfast toast to BLTs. Somewhere along the line, as ketchup and other commercially produced spreads soared in popularity, tomato jam became scarcer than hen's teeth. But recently, chefs like Lucas Manteca have rediscovered the sweet/savory condiment. We think you will be taken too..

Each year toward the end of August, we say so long to some of our wonderful staff as they either head off to college or their graduate studies. We also say hello to new staff and welcome them to the BSG during this part of their life journey.

This year in addition to those who have already departed for school we say so-long to:
Tess, Madelyn, Nason and Olivia. We wish them the very best and hope to see them on breaks as they return home over the holidays.

In next week's promotional, we'll introduce you to some of the new faces here at the coffee shop.

Coffee News!

During September we will be introducing several new coffees to our lineup at BSG. Already on the shelves as a retail coffee and available as a Pour Over is our Finca Idealista Pacas from Nicaragua. Coming soon will be Roi Farms SL28 from Kenya.

We will also be rolling out a new BSG exclusive Select Single Origin from Panama later this month.

This new select single origin (SO) is the honey-process lot from "Paso Ancho", an estate located high on the hillside above the large, well known Finca La Florentina, which is down in the flat valley Paso Ancho is roughly another 500 meters higher up, on a very steep hillside with southern exposure. Due to the high altitude, the coffee has greater density, and we find this is a more piquant cup than the coffee from some of the lower grown estates. The farm is connected to it's own, independent micro-mill down in the valley and uses the de-mucilage process where the mucilage is stripped off the parchment layer using friction, rather than traditional fermentation. The entire farm is very high altitude; it starts at 1750 meters, an altitude many farms don't even reach, and goes up from there to as high as 1900! Altitude matters with coffee, and you can taste the difference here. Altitude allows coffee to ripen more slowly, creates greater bean density, and results in higher concentrations of bright, snappy, acidity in the cup.

This lot from Paso Ancho is honey-processed, and the sweetness found in the cup shows honey flavor characteristics too. Big body and mild acidity are notable, You will find this cup is balanced, and an extremely good single origin (SO). This new coffee will be a medium dark roast

Requiesce in pace

We are sad to announce that local artist Michelle Crippen whose work is currently featured on the walls at the Broad Street Grind, lost her valiant 3-year fight to the dragon of cancer on Sunday August 23rd.

Michelle said;

Cancer has a way of changing one's life in the most unpredictable ways. Among the life altering changes, I think I managed to find perhaps a small silver lining. After battling eye, brain and neck cancer for two years, someone suggested art therapy for me as a way to process all life had thrown at me.

About a month into my painting, I discovered my eye cancer was back with a vengeance. I have already lost the sight in my right eye and I am currently fighting to keep it in my left eye, though it is proving difficult.

Painting for me is therapy. When I see the vibrant colors they make me so happy. "

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Michelle, a dear friend, a faithful witness to God's love and care and an encouragement to all who met her. Early on in her struggle, she could be frequently found here in the coffee shop, while her daughter was a student in a local Classical education program. Please join me in prayer for the Crippen family during this time of loss and grief.

We rejoice that Michelle is now free of the ravages of this dreadful disease and is at Rest in her Heavenly Father's Home. Rest in peace dear friend.
