Building the faith voice for climate justice

Supporters’ Day and AGM

Saturday 13 June, Birmingham

Please join us at our annual Supporters’ Day on Saturday 13 June in Birmingham to explore how we can continue building the climate movement in churches. Following a short AGM to hear about our activities over the last year there will be a range of speakers and workshops. The day will focus on engaging the Christian community on climate action at both a local and international level, including how to mobilise churches; pilgrimages and events in the run-up to the Paris climate summit this November; exploring our Christian calling to action; and next steps for the Bright Now campaign. Please book your place here (the cost for the day is £10 / £5.)

Speak Up: For the love of …

Join us at the mass lobby of Parliament on Wednesday 17 June for an inspirational day of action on climate change. This will be your chance to tell the new government to take strong action to protect everything we hold dear that is threatened by climate change. Over 10,000 are expected, representing all constituencies in the UK.

Operation Noah supporters will be meeting up at 11.45am outside the Emmanuel Centre on Marsham Street before the ecumenical church service begins at 12pm. Event details about the church service can be found here. After the service there will be films and talks, stands from the range of organisations that work on climate change, an interfaith art installation and the finale rally outside Parliament at 4.30pm. The lobby of MPs will take place from 1pm to 4pm and MPs will come out to meet with their constituents in the streets around Parliament.

Find out more about what is happening on the day and how you can get involved, and sign up here. Please encourage your church community to get involved, for example by organising a bunting-making session, giving a talk or distributing posters. There is a full lobby guide with more details available on our website.

Reflections on the general election climate policy headlines

Quaker Peace and Social Witness has produced a useful briefing on the seven major party manifestos as they relate to energy and climate justice issues. Operation Noah has provided a summary of each party’s position on climate and energy policy here, drawing upon this QPSW resource. This summary draws out interesting headlines rather than being a full analysis of the policy implications of the manifesto statements and does not compare like with like.

The full QPSW briefing is available here and the Centre for Alternative Technology has also produced an analysis of general election climate policies here.

Baked Alaska: time to change the temperature

From the four corners of the earth come inter-connecting stories of human beings living with the wild, unpredictable effects of climate change. Riding Lights Theatre Company has created an inspiring performance which is challenging but fun, urgent but hopeful. Smiling nervously, four actors place themselves in one another’s shoes to test the heat around the globe. The show is committed to raising a Christian voice in the call to worldwide action - that love for God the Creator and all he has made to enjoy, goes hand in hand with love for our neighbours everywhere who share this extraordinary planet.

Tour dates are being taken up fast so if you would like the show to come to your area please get in touch to book a date. Please contact on email or phone: caitlin@rltc.org / 01904 655317. Further details about the drama tour are available here.

CofE divests

Church of England divests £12 million from thermal coal and tar sands companies!

Last week the Church of England divested £12 million from thermal coal and tar sands companies as part of a new climate change policy. The policy excludes companies deriving more than 10% of their revenues from tar sands and thermal coal and commits the Church to increasing its investment in climate adaptation and clean energy. It further states that the Church will divest from other fossil fuel companies that do not take seriously their responsibility to assist the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Read more about our response to the decision here.

Three Methodist Circuits pass motions calling on the Methodist Church to divest

In the last two months, three Methodist Circuits and Districts have passed motions (memorials) calling on the Church to divest from oil, gas and coal companies. These will be debated at Methodist Conference in June.

In a new climate change policy released last week, the Methodist Church outlined criteria for divesting from tar sands and thermal coal companies, as well as companies exploring new reserves which, if burned, will reduce the likelihood of reaching emissions reduction targets. Find out more here.
