CENIC Successfully Validates Coherent Pluggables over CENIC’s Production Network

The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) announced the successful validation of ZR Plus coherent pluggables over CENIC’s production optical line system between Los Angeles and Sunnyvale, spanning a 750 km amplified distance.

Using ZR Plus coherent optics in QSFP-DD form factor installed in a router
at each end, CENIC turned up a 300G optical service and confirmed the error-free performance of the service, with a comfortable operating margin.

Tribal Broadband Connectivity: Obstacles, Opportunities, Optimism

In southern California, some of the broadband needs of Tribal communities have been addressed by a connection between the Tribal Digital Village Network (TDVNet) and the statewide fiber-based, high-performance CENIC backbone that provides TDVNet with extremely cost-effective backhaul connectivity. However, major obstacles to dedicated Tribal broadband infrastructure still remain.

At CENIC’s 2022 Annual Conference, Tribal telecommunications experts Matthew “Speygee” Douglas, Linnea Jackson, and Matt Rantanen shed light on a few of these obstacles – what they are and how they complicate Tribal broadband deployments in California – and how progress has been made in the face of them. CENIC and Pacific Northwest Gigapop receive SCinet Spirit of Innovation Award

SCinet has awarded the SCinet Spirit of Innovation Award to seventeen organizations who were instrumental in supporting demonstrations of large-scale international science at SC22 during a private ceremony on Monday, November 14. Those recognized are: AARNet, APONET, ARENA-PAC, CENIC, Ciena, Cisco, HARNET, Internet2, KISTI, NICT, NII, Pacific Northwest Gigapop, REANNZ, SingAREN, TransPAC, University of Hawaii, and Verizon.

The seventeen organizations recognized with the SCinet Spirit of Innovation Award were instrumental in supporting some of the more outstanding demonstrations involving international engagement. READ THE ARTICLE >

Old Problems Need New Solutions: Digital Equity in California

To solve problems that have never been solved, we must do things that have never been done.

In a nutshell, this was the message shared by California leaders in economic development, higher education, policy, and infrastructure during the “Digital Equity in California” panel at CENIC’s 2022 Conference that took place this September in Monterey, CA.

During the discussion, panelists described creative new approaches to funding, infrastructure, partnering, and community engagement used by their organizations to expand broadband access to historically un- and underserved rural and urban communities in California. READ THE ARTICLE >

CSUSB accelerates research through connections to high performance computing

California State University, San Bernardino has been selected as a sub-awardee, along with San Diego State University (SDSU), in a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant.

The five-year, $6.7 million grant will help train and create cyber infrastructure professional positions to support faculty research. CSUSB and SDSU will lead the way to serve Hispanic-Serving Institutions and Minority-Serving Institutions. READ THE RELEASE >

CPUC Draft Resolution for Tribal Broadband Funds

Draft Resolution T-17772 will be on the Commission’s December 1, 2022, meeting agenda. Resolution T-17772 authorizes the release of California Advanced Services Fund grant monies to Karuk Tribe (U-7235-C), to Construct the Klamath River Rural Broadband and Initiative Project in Humboldt County; and adopts the Final Initial Study/Environmental Assessment and Mitigated Negative Declaration (IS/MND/EA) for the Klamath River Rural Broadband Initiative Project. Tribal Broadband Bootcamps Announced for 2023 with Expanded Schedule

Tribal Broadband Bootcamps, which have worked with 20 Tribes and over 100 participants over the past 2 years, offering hands-on training in wireless and fiber-optic networks, will continue in 2023 with an expanded schedule and expanded curriculum.

Additional events will be announced in the coming months, and the first event will be hosted by Gila River in January 2023. Hoopa Valley will host one in May. Additional events are planned in March and June and will continue over the course of the year. LEARN MORE >

SHLB urges FCC to label anchor institutions as broadband serviceable locations

With just over a month remaining until the FCC's deadline for broadband map challenges, the Schools, Health & Libraries Broadband (SHLB) Coalition is raising concerns over how the map displays community anchor institutions (CAIs) and is asking the Commission to revise its process.

According to an ex parte letter, representatives from SHLB recently met with members of the FCC's Broadband Data Task Force to discuss the fact that the FCC's broadband map automatically flags anchor institutions like schools and hospitals as being non-broadband serviceable locations (BSLs).

FCC Releases New National Broadband Maps, Accepting Public Challenges

The Federal Communications Commission today released a pre-production draft of its new National Broadband Map. The map will display specific location-level information about broadband services available throughout the country – a significant step forward from the census block-level data previously collected. This release of the draft map kicks off the public challenge processes that will play a critical role in improving the accuracy of the map. LEARN MORE >

Women in Networking at SC (WINS) 2023 Call for Participation

The Women in IT Networking at SC (WINS) program is seeking qualified female candidates in their early- to mid-career to join the SCinet volunteer workforce for the Supercomputing 2023 Conference (SC23), to be held in Denver, CO November 12-17, 2023. WINS strives to have diverse representation of organizations and applicant backgrounds in the cohort each year. FCC Grants First 2.5 GHz Auction Licenses To Boost Mid-Band Spectrum For Rural America

The FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau granted the first batch of new, flexible-use, county-based overlay wireless licenses made available in the 2.5 GHz auction, Auction 108. With most of the available spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band located in rural areas, this auction provides vital spectrum resources to support wireless services in rural communities. LEARN MORE >
