On June 21 in Eugene, Oregon, Heather MacLean ran 4:02.09 in the 1500 to qualify for the USA Olympic Team. The women’s 1500 will be run on August 2 in Tokyo.
On Wednesday, July 14, Heather visited Braz Camp and spoke with the cross-country athletes at 8am and the all-sports athletes at 9am. She described her Olympic-qualifying 1500 three weeks earlier as a race where she let her mind and body take over and simply executed.
Heather answered questions from campers about her training and life as a professional runner. She remains amazed that her job is not to go into an office to "work" but to go for a run -- twice a day. She congratulated the xc and all-sports athletes for dedicating a part of their summer to building their speed and endurance for success in the fall.
Before heading to UMass, where she achieved All-American status, Heather ran at Peabody High School, where she set records in the 400, 600, and 800, and won Division 1 State Titles in the 600 and 800. Her 800 PR is 1:59, her mile PR is 4:25. She runs professionally for Team New Balance Boston.
