Izzy here. "Shalom" means peace in the sense of wholeness or completion. Our tribe loves this word for so many reasons!
"Shalom" was the first word off the mouth of our Rabbi Yeshua when he appeared to his disciples after his comeback from the dead. (John 20:19) And we're all about following Yeshua in a Hebrew way!
"Grace and shalom" was also a favourite greeting in the early Yeshua movement (1:1 of pretty much every one of Paul's letters lol)
The good news of Messiah is the "gospel of shalom". (Ephesians 6:15)
"Shalom" is one of the names of God (Judges 6:24), and one of the the titles of Messiah, who is the "Sar Shalom". (Isaiah 9:6)
"Shalom" is the last word in the Priestly Blessing - just saying "shalom" to someone is blessing them! (Numbers 6:26)
"Shalom" is also the Hebrew word for hello and good-bye. So if you've ever talked with me on the phone, you probably noticed the first thing I say is "Shalom (insert your name here)!" and right before I hung up I probably said "ok, shalom bye".
Anyways, one of our volunteers, Clear (who helped me with our focus statement here and hosts the Assemble-Together community here), took shalom to a whole new level when he shared this hilarious video with our volunteer circle. Now we don't say just say shalom to each other, we say SHAL@@@@MMM!!!
And now you know...the rest of the story. :)
Elizabeth's Story
Elizabeth is following Yeshua in a Hebrew way! Here’s her story.
The biggest thing I’ve learned so far since I’ve started with Holy Language is Hebrew is backwards from English like I was taught. I’ve had trouble with mild dyslexia all my life. Nothing major, just flipping numbers backwards, or thinking I’ve said one thing, but it was the total opposite. I always figured I was just tired or something.
I’ve very recently realized that I need to learn Hebrew, and I’ve only done a couple of Izzy’s lessons, but it struck me that Hebrew is written opposite from the way I’ve been raised to think and read. I was just sitting there in front of my computer the other day and stopped the video. The Holy Spirit put a sense that dyslexia was never the issue for me. I’ve been doing things so backwards from the way our Father designed for us. It was like I knew for the first time my struggles are because I’m not lining up with Him and I don’t know His ways and culture and language. I’ve been surrounded and taught a foreign culture and language. I realize that there is endless depth for understanding and learning, because we are missing out on G-d’s culture. It’s more than just a language barrier.
I’m very excited to learn more and live as He designed. Thank you Izzy and your team, for doing these teachings and making them easy to access from anywhere!
