Prayer 8

Join us this month as Christ’s Church Militant here in earth to raise our voices in PRAYER and SUPPLICATION to our heavenly Father as his wrath is revealed in PLAGUE or common sickness as COVID-19 cases rise exponentially after the holiday season:

O ALMIGHTY God, who in your wrath sent a plague upon your own people in the wilderness, for their obstinate rebellion against Moses and Aaron; and in the time of king David, sent a plague of pestilence that killed seventy thousand, but remembering your mercy spared the rest: Have pity upon us miserable sinners who now are visited with great sickness and mortality; and in the same way that you then accepted an atonement and commanded the destroying Angel to cease from punishing, so may it now please you to withdraw from us this plague and grievous sickness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

And in light of the civil unrest in the United States Capital as the inauguration draws near, we return this month to pray for our nation:

O ALMIGHTY God, who are a strong tower of defense to those who put their trust in you, whose power no creature is able to resist, we make our humble cry to you in this hour of our country’s need. Your property is always to have mercy. Deal not with us according to our sins, neither reward us according to our iniquities; but stretch out the right hand of your Majesty, and be our defense for your name's sake. Have pity upon our brothers and sisters who are in rebellion against the constituted authorities of the land, and show them the error of their way. Shed upon the counsels of our Rulers the spirit of wisdom and moderation and firmness, and unite the hearts of our people as the heart of one man in upholding the supremacy of Law, and the cause of justice and peace. Abate the violence of passion; banish pride and prejudice from every heart, and incline us all to trust in your righteous Providence, and to be ready for every duty. And oh, that in your great mercy, so order all things that peace and happiness, truth and justice, religion and piety, may be established among us for all generations. These things, and whatever else you shall see to be necessary and convenient for us, we humbly beg through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.

   •    Give THANKS for the release of more effective vaccines to arrest the life-threatening complications of COVID-19 for the men and women most at risk. PRAY for patience among our citizenry and cool heads among our leaders to avoid cutting corners but to keep to the disciplines of roll-out required by the immunological evidence.

   •    Continue to PRAY for those who are waking up each day to the fallout caused by COVID-19. PRAY especially for families who enter the New Year for the first time since a loved one, and for some, loved ones who died of complications from COVID-19.

   •    PRAY for J’s parents as they care for him through his fears. He had a rough few weeks as Christmas holidays ended and school resumed. PRAY that therapy and counseling remains effective. PRAY for the Inglis family as young father Jonathan struggles in his battle with COVID-19.

   •    PRAY for the men’s group as they begin their next study on the first Monday in February of Carl Trueman’s The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self.

   •    Give THANKS for my new sermon series on the Letter of James. Feedback has been positive. Give THANKS to God for overseeing our sermon program. PRAY that his Spirit would use tomorrow's sermon to stir up greater eagerness to serve.

   •    Our current sermon series ends on Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians on the Second Sunday of Advent. Please PRAY that God would help me to preach effectively, and that the church would respond well to the call repentance and faith.

   •    PRAY for our annual parish meeting 17 January. Give THANKS that our internal giving has held up this year despite COVID-19 and for the lack of division among us in 2020 due to COVID-19 and safety protocols, liturgy, the immediate necessity of ‘person-to-person’ Holy Communion, and the conflict in our wider Commonwealth of the USA never reached us. Give THANKS that our attendance rose in 2020 due to online participation.
