TFA e-BITES

ISSUE 01: January 11th 2019

James Gray - Headshot

James Gray, TFA National Chairman

Welcome to a new year of TFA e-BITES

A Message from our National Chairman

'Most people think of 01 Jan as the start of the year, but for farmers it all began last autumn when the harvest had been gathered, the next year’s crops were being planted and the tups were being put in with the ewes. Few other parts of the economy are as vital as farming (we could live without the NHS but try living without food ...) and yet many people regard farmers as quaint anachronisms.

We are grateful to George and the team at TFA head office for constantly promoting our members' interests to those in power. It will be interesting to see how the Government views our industry as they continue to take back control of UK agriculture during 2019. Whatever they come up with, we can remain secure in the knowledge that farming is, and always has been, a fulfilling, worthwhile and, dare I say, honourable way to earn a living.

Happy New Year!!

Yours James

Changes to TB Compensation Payments in England

Following a review of the strategy for achieving official TB free status for England, DEFRA has adopted recommendations to the way that compensation funding is used to incentivise on-farm practices to reduce disease risks. These changes, which came into effect from 01 November 2018, are aimed at reducing the number of unclean cattle sent for compulsory slaughter and reducing the number of cattle brought into a TB breakdown herd and subsequently removed for TB control purposes. To find out more about these changes, please visit the TB hub by clicking here.

And Finally...

Farm Safety

The TFA has renewed its pledge to the Farm Safety Partnership (FSP) who aim to help reduce farm workplace fatal accidents by 50% by 2023. One of the most common causes of serious and fatal injuries in agriculture, involve moving and overturning vehicles.

Therefore we have put together a quick guide of top tips to improve safety around farm machinery and transport:

1. Safe Stop – Handbrake on, controls in neutral, engine off and remove keys whenever you leave a machine or vehicle.
2. Where possible, carry out a visual inspection of the machine prior to use.
3. Never remove or modify guards to save time.
4. Only use a machine if you know how to use it safely and have received suitable training.
5. Machines have no brains so always use your own, a second of lost concentration can cost your life.
6. When driving any machine, always wear a seat belt.
