On August 15th, Global News reported that Federal Justice Minister, The Hon. David Lametti expressed that the federal government planned to make the criminalization of conversion therapy (CT) a priority if re-elected.

In the same interview, government spokesperson MP Randy Boissonnault stated, "The federal government also spoke about the possibility of revoking charitable status...For example, churches [and] faith communities that continue to use or promote conversion therapy." On October 21st, the Liberal Party was re-elected with a minority government.

On November 20th, The Hon. David Lametti was re-sworn in as Justice Minister and Attorney General.

Yesterday, December 10th, Senator Serge Joyal tabled a conversion therapy bill federally.

SUMMARY of S-202

▪	This enactment amends the Criminal Code to make it an offence to advertise conversion therapy services for consideration and to obtain a financial or other material benefit for the provision of conversion therapy to a person under the age of eighteen.

CONVERSION THERAPY BILLS ALSO ADVANCING IN MUNICIPALITIES: EDMONTON

Yesterday, December 10th, 2019, Edmonton City Hall moved to ban conversion therapy in an unanimous vote. The focus of the ban is on those who commercially practice therapy and counseling. At this point, the ban is not enforceable in places of worship. Some observers indicate this is because freedom of religion is of federal jurisdiction, not municipal.

Municipal, provincial and federal elected officials and advocates have been collaborating to push for conversion therapy bans implemented at every level of governance nationally.
