It's so easy to be distracted these days, don't you think? A million things can demand our attention all at once and it can easily leave one feeling like being chased by a chihuahua biting at your heals. Not to mention that drained feeling at the end of the day when you realize that you did not achieve what you set out to do as you were driven to distraction most of the day. We easily blame our devices and social media for diverting our attention, but some research shows that we are not distracted by the environment around us, but by our own minds. Our brains' default mode of operation is apparently 'mind wandering'. It's such a natural state that we are not even aware we are doing it. Think about how your mind wanders when waiting in line to board a plane. We feel distracted, but it's just because we are not able to focus our attention. Not sure I'm convinced that technology does not have a part to play, as each generation seems to become more distracted. Being aware and mindful of how often and where our minds wander can however only help focus our attention. Now let me just open the door for the dog and check the ping on my phone ..
