HTA Bulletin [Week 2, April 2017]
This week we share a few pieces about the public haranguing of two Muslim sisters, emphasising that the issue the media have is with Islam itself, rather than specific issues of fiqh. We also present a video on the horrific "Mother Of All Bombs" which was dropped on Afghanistan last week.

‘It’s OK for Muslim men to hit their wives’ is the sensational title that The Australian opted for when reporting on a video in which two Muslim women, members of Hizb ut-Tahrir, relayed the tafsir of a verse of the Qur’an. This predictably sent the media into overdrive and soon all major outlets were covering the story with a domestic violence angle, with politicians lining up to comment and take the moral high ground. Some within the Muslim community released a statement denouncing domestic violence and criticising the view expressed in the video.
Two days later and one of the signatories of that statement, Sheikh Shady Alsuleiman (President of the Australian National Imams Council) is the next media target.
Muslim community activist Uthman Badar also addressed the events surrounding the alleged "Domestic Violence" video:
"Critcisms made of Islam are not for genuine debate or engagement. Hence, we should refuse the media their interrogation of Islam. This is by refusing to engage on what they are using as a mere tool of attack and instead to expose the attack and/or flip the tables."
Last week's infamous statement by thirty-odd members of the community was apparently issued to correct the “damage” caused by a video with two sisters discussing the tafsir of a verse. One of the signatories went on mainstream media last night saying, “The video is completely inaccurate and the video articulates a message that is in contravention with the principles of Islam.” This is incorrect, and he knows it since he is well-aware of the classical fiqh and tafsir literature on the issue.
A message and du'a to our sisters from thousands in Indonesia!
Ustadh Abu Anas Alwahwah is currently in Indonesia. He made a du'a for our sisters there at an event attended by thousands of Muslims, sisters included!
"To our dear sisters Reem and Atiqa:
From Sumatra in Indonesia I heard the barks of the filthy media that targeted you and I felt the stab wounds of those who are supposed to be brothers and sisters in the Deen.
Your crime my dear sisters was that you relayed the tafsir of a verse from the book of Allah in a way that pleases Allah and in accordance with the tafsirs of the great classical scholars.
However this tafsir was disliked by the media - so they exhausted all their efforts and tools to attack you harshly.
Allah almighty says:
"And they will continue to fight you until they turn you back from your religion if they are able."
I send to you a warm greeting from me and from thousands of your sisters in Sumatra and Indonesia. Those sisters made du'a for you and made du'a against those who attacked you and forsaken you.
