Thanks, Ontario Trillium Foundation and Byron Turner!

In April, 2014, the ABCA was awarded a sizable grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to improve the ABC Hall. With Director, Byron Turner at the helm, 20 active participants logged more than 450 volunteer hours over a year and a half on this important project.

During this time, new multimedia equipment, tables and chairs were purchased, the heating and ventilation system was upgraded, the hall was insulated and sided, eavestroughs were installed, and the timber-frame portico (in memory of former ABCA President, Martin Yates) was built.

We are so lucky to have such a comfortable, well-equipped facility in the heart of our rural community - please use it! We are a non-profit organization run by volunteers so your suggestions, support and participation is vital, and always welcome and greatly appreciated. Membership is only $10 per family per year though you don't have to be a member to help :-).

Thanks, Annie Dalton!

This summer, we commissioned local graphic designer Annie Dalton to design a logo for the ABCA, and a new roadside sign for the hall. We love her playful variation on the 'tree of life' - it brings to mind interconnection and family roots of course, but also the lumbering history of the area, and even memories of the old oak tree that once stood in the hall parking lot. As a symbol of shelter, friendship and goodwill, we think it's just perfect for the Althorpe Bolingbroke Community, and a hall that's been connecting neighbours since 1947. Kudos, Annie!

The sign structure echoes the new hall portico. It was built by ABCA President Mike Erion, who also painted and lettered the sign; Sign Design in Perth fabricated the round logo. A fitting beacon for our renovated community hall!

Thanks, The Festival of Small Halls!

We were thrilled to host the recent Festival of Small Halls event featuring Cape Breton's Beolach, and our own fiddle wizard, Jessica Wedden. The day was sunny and warm, the hall was jammed, and the music, hot! Several of the original ABC family members were among the invited guests, and MPP Randy Hillier was also on hand to present ABCA President, Mike Erion, with a plaque recognizing the Trillium grant.

Our sincere thanks to all the participants and volunteers who helped make this a day to remember.

Silent Auction Success

This was such a good time! There was a wide and wonderful array of products and services up for grabs, from loads of gravel and gift certificates to a diamond ring, thanks to the generosity of several local businesses and individuals. Plus, Wilton Cheese and Perth Brewery were on hand to provide yummy nibbles and nips. Plans are already underway for next year.

Thank you one and all for helping make this a well-attended and successful fundraising - and very fun - event!

Sample, Socialize & Shop

The fun keeps coming! Here's another fantastic fundraising event, our annual Pampered Chef party hosted by PC Consultant Jan Theoret and ABCA Director of Events, Pat Hough.

Enjoy product demos and tasty food (like Hearty Tuscan Soup, Festive Holiday Cheese Spread and Gingerbread Trees) with friends and neighbours at the ABC Hall on Saturday afternoon, November 7 from 1-4 p.m.

Pampered Chef kitchen tools are top-notch and would make the cook or baker on your Christmas list mighty happy, too!

If you're not able to attend, but would like to purchase some products, you can place your order with Jan beforehand; the ABCA will still get credit for the sale.

I hope you enjoyed a happy Thanksgiving with those near and dear to you. The weather was superb, and the fall colours, spectacular!

Despite best laid plans, I wasn't able to get this newsletter out prior to the holiday weekend due to an interruption of our internet service. From that experience, two things became abundantly clear. The first, how dependent I was on 'the internet' for everything I do; secondly, how grateful I was for the break from it. Instead of spending hours staring at a computer screen, I could fully savour the incredible beauty that surrounds us here in the Althorpe Bolingbroke Community.

Speaking of beauty, I love this shot of the Thanks-Giving Square chapel in Dallas, Texas. Now that's glorious!
