NASUS Board of Directors, AGM April 25, 2017

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

On April 25th, the Board of Directors was privileged to present the results of 2016 to the Regional Councillor Bobbie Drew, Uxbridge Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor and some of our great volunteers.

Ginger Jackson, the President of NASUS opened the AGM with some highlights of all the amazing things that were accomplished in 2016. Most notably the announcement that we have commitments from both townships for shovels in the ground in 2018!!

Financial report:

Treasurer, Steve Anderson presented the financial report for the year. Some key metrics: Cash intakes over $150k; cash outflows over $30k for net intake of $120k. Ending balance sheet included over $500k in cash and liquid assets plus over $25k in capital assets. Additional amounts have been pledged or committed that were not included in the financial statements.

Fundraising update:

The head of our Fundraising Committee, Amy Stevenson, gave an update on the results of 2016 fundraising efforts and upcoming fundraising plans. Fundraising efforts in 2016 resulted in: $44k in funds raised via our Gala (net of expenses this raised almost $31k); $37k in funds raised via our golf tournament (net of expenses almost $23k); $11k in funds raised via our walkathon (net of expenses this raised almost $10k); and almost $6k raised via third party fundraising in the community.

Major gifts update:

Next, Paul Bussiere, the Chair of our Major Gifts Committee discussed plans for a major campaign expected to be initiated in 2017.

Build update:

Tara Rosen, Co-Chair of the Build Committee presented the results of 2016 including a very exciting partnership with George Brown College which resulted in enhanced designs and a more accurate estimate, a physical and BIM model of the shelter (which was turned into a fantastic video which allowed us to get our first real glimpse of the shelter). This partnership also gave us access to research funding from the provincial and federal government to offset certain project costs. Tara also discussed in more detail the results of site assessments and the finalization of the shelter design. Further, she stated that at the end of March 2017 both Townships advised the Board that as the shelter construction project moves into the tendering phase, the townships will assume full responsibility for the build.

Governance and communication update:

Liz Williams, then presented her report of the activities of the Governance and Communication Committees during 2016.

Volunteer update

And last (but definitely not least) – the Chair of the Volunteer Committee, Tara Rosen and the other members of the committee, Amy Stevenson, Ginger Jackson and Melinda Diebel were excited to recognize some of our amazing volunteers and their outstanding contributions in 2016.

Highlight on Community Partners: Willowtree fundraiser

A huge thank you goes out to Willowtree Farm in Port Perry for hopping into some fundraising support for the New Animal Shelter over the Easter weekend! Willowtree included a “pictures with baby animals” option as part of their annual Easter Egg-Stravaganza weekend in support of our shelter. Check out some great pictures from this event here.

Focus on Volunteers: Erica Dale

Going forward, we want to profile one of our 2016 top 10 volunteers in each volunteer newsletter. For May, we are focusing on Erica Dale.

Erica Dale, our amazingly wonderful Fundraising Committee Secretary, Gimme Shelter Gala Co-Chair and all around super volunteer has been with us since the Fundraising group started. She keeps us organized and on-track with her meeting minutes (which usually hit our inboxes before we get home from the meeting!), makes us laugh with her contagious sense of humour and gets us ready for events by lending a hand whenever she can.

This year she took on a third party fundraiser and was a huge part of the success of the Wild West Saloon Night in March. Event planning is not easy but she manages to do it all with a smile on her face. I am honoured that she chooses to dedicate her volunteer time to NASUS and also to call her my friend. Thank you Erica for all you do!

The New Animal Shelter for Uxbridge-Scugog (NASUS) was formed in 2011 to raise funds to build a new facility to care for lost, abandoned and neglected animals in the two townships.

We are a registered charity which is 100% volunteer-run with over 100 residents, many community groups and countless local businesses working together to raise funds and support planning activities.
