When creating Theatre for Young Audiences, how do we ensure the voices of young people are heard? This webinar invites playwrights and theatre makers to ponder different ways youth can be invited into their developments processes. José Cruz González, Drew Peterson, and Suzan Zeder will serve as panelists to talk about their recent experiences engaging youth within the creative development of their work. The webinar will be moderated by University of Texas at Austin MFA Candidate Meredyth Pederson.

José Cruz González

José Cruz González's plays include The Sun Serpent, Invierno, Sunsets and Margaritas, The Heart’s Desire, Tomás and the Library Lady, Lily Plants A Garden, September Shoes. Mr. González has written for PAZ, an Emmy Award nominated television series produced by Discovery Kids for The Learning Channel. Mr. González was a recipient of a 2004 TCG/Pew National Theatre Residency grant and a 1997 NEA/TCG Theatre Residency Program for Playwrights. In 1985 he was a NEA Director Fellow. He teaches theatre at California State University at Los Angeles. He is a member of The Dramatists Guild of America and TYA/USA. He is an Associate Artist with Cornerstone Theater Company (CA), and Playwright in Residence with Childsplay (AZ) and South Coast Repertory (Costa Mesa, CA).

Suzan-Zeder medium

Suzan Zeder is one of the nation's leading playwrights of plays for young and family audiences. Her work has been seen in all fifty states and has been produced and published in Great Britain, Germany, Australia, Japan. Israel, and Switzerland. She is the four time winner of the Distinguished Play award from the American Alliance of Theatre and Education, most recently in 1999 for her play The Taste of Sunrise. She has chaired the Playwright's Fellowship panel for the National Endowment for the Arts and Theatre Communications Group. In 1997 she was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theatre. Most recently she has written the book and additional lyrics for a major musical Time Again in Oz, co-produced by Seattle Children's Theatre and The University of Texas at Austin's Department of Theatre and Dance. She has recently retired from The University of Texas at Austin and is currently working on three old/new plays.

Drew Petersen Headshot

Drew Petersen is a Brooklyn based artist and teacher. He currently is an educator with The Park Avenue Armory, The New Victory Theater, and he is the drama teacher at the Blue School, a progressive elementary school in lower Manhattan founded by the Blue Man Group. As an artist, he is the Associate Artistic Director for Trusty Sidekick Theater Company, a theater company devoted to creating high quality, original work for young audiences and their families. With Trusty Sidekick, Drew has made theater for and with children at numerous institutions including The New Victory Theater, Park Avenue Armory and Cleveland Playhouse Square. Drew is also an extended company member of Philadelphia based Curio Theater Company. He holds a M.A. in Educational Theater for Colleges and Communities from N.Y.U.

Meredyth Pederson is an MFA candidate in the Drama and Theatre for Youth and Communities program at the University of Texas at Austin. She holds her undergraduate degree in theatre from American University in Washington, DC. She has worked as a teaching artist at Imagination Stage, Lexington Children's Theatre, Trinity Repertory Company, and Metro Theater Company. Currently at UT, Meredyth is actively exploring the multiple intersections of teaching artistry and theatre-making in a variety of areas including arts integration, community engagement, and dramaturgy in TYA.
