Working to preserve the land west of Lake Waubesa from poorly planned development

Dear Friend,

This will be the shortest newsletter ever, as I'm writing it after getting home from the CARPC meeting and before getting some well-earned rest!

WE WON!

Yes, the Northeast Neighborhood proposal was defeated. It needed 8 votes to win, and it got 6. Six commissioners voted against it, and one position is vacant, so it was defeated.

Here is the honor roll of those who voted against the NEN:

Commissioner Joe Ball
Commissioner Ken Golden
Commissioner Kris Hampton
Commissioner Peter McKeever
Commissioner Ed Minihan
Commissioner Caryl Terrell

Those who voted for it were:
Commissioner Zach Brandon
Commissioner Mark Geller
Commissioner Eric Hohol
Commissioner Jason Kramar
Commissioner Larry Palm
Commissioner Evan Touchette

It is likely that the City of Fitchburg will appeal this decision to the Department of Natural Resources, which has the ultimate decision-making power.

We'll keep you posted.

Thanks for your help!

I counted 60 of us there tonight, and I might have missed some, as the 2 seating sections can't see each other. And many people responded to our appeals by sending a last minute flurry of emails to the commissioners.

Surprisingly, the chair permitted people to speak, even though the public hearing was over. Several people who had not been able to attend the hearing spoke in opposition, and a few spoke in favor, including former Fitchburg alder Bill Horns.

You'll be able to watch the meeting on FACTV

(FItchburg cable access), as a wonderful volunteer named Matt taped it. You can watch government meeting tapes from the archives by clicking here and scrolling down til you see this...

...putting CARPC in the search bar on the left, then searching again under SHOW SEARCH.

We'll have to have a victory party, probably in January.

When Capital Times reporter Bryna Godar asked me for a comment at the end, I said, "Slow and steady wins the race. We've been working on this for 9 years. Tonight was a great victory, but it's not over yet. We'll just keep on working, for another 9 years if necessary."

Right now I want to thank all the public officials and scientists who have written columns and testified, and everyone who has registered and spoken at hearings and meetings, written emails, made phone calls, signed and passed petitions, given donations, done data entry, passed on our news through social media, helped with our videos, and anything and everything else!

Please give yourselves a pat on the back, and know that this would not have been possible without you!

Mayoral candidate Steve Arnold

Guess what?

On April 7, Fitchburg voters will have a choice of who they want to lead the city for the next 2 years. Fitchburg Alder Steve Arnold announced on Nov. 10 that he is running for mayor!

Steve testified against both the North Stoner Prairie and the Northeast Neighborhood Urban Service Area amendments.
