This series has been made possible by the work of our host, Miri Kaiser, and the generosity of the Foundation for Jewish Philanthropies. THANK YOU!

CAY's 1st Annual Film Series
Curated by Chaim Kohn

While these six films span the greater part of a century and travel from Lodz to the Lower East Side, they seem to share a similar story and struggle: Eastern piety versus Western materialism, tradition versus modernity and faith versus learned experience. Generations later, we find these struggles very much a part of our own stories. Much like in these films, somehow no matter what we choose, and often despite our own deepest inclinations, we must either concede or warmly embrace a simple truth: there’s just no place like home.

Disclaimer: These movies will make you laugh, cry, and very possibly call your mother more often.

Mondays @ CAY, 8pm
Beginning May 4th

May 4th: The Jazz Singer
1927 USA, Drama/Musical
90 minutes, B&W, Silent/sound

This landmark of modern cinema, the first talking picture, is also a pro-assimilationist story focusing on the conflicts between generations and between the old and new worlds. Al Jolson plays Jakie, a cantor's son who rejects his family's tradition and wish for him to follow in his father's footsteps by heading for Jazz and Broadway.

world-cafe-protocol-1-728

This is an official invitation to be a part of the making and shaping of our Shul, a community built from our collective vision.

First step? Attending a World Cafe, a night dedicated to the most important conversation in our shul's history -- driven by the people. Working in groups, we will hold open, but focused, discussions on the future of Chevra Ahavas Yisroel.

The Details
Tuesday, May 12 @ 8pm
BYOB - for yourself and to share!

What is a World Cafe?
World Cafe is a group collective experience that has been utilized by corporations and non-profits--both secular and religious--around the world. The Café is built on the assumption that people already have within them the wisdom and creativity to confront even the most difficult challenges. Given the appropriate context and focus, it is possible to access and use this deeper knowledge about what’s important.

Rabbi Lazer Brody with Dr. Zev Ballen @ CAY

Tuesday, May 19th @ 8pm
Suggested Donation: $10

Rabbi Lazer Brody is a world renowned author, orator and Chossid who has brought the teachings of Rebbi Nachman of Breslov to hundreds of thousands of english speakers through his Yeshiva, lectures and books. He is the foremost translator for the works of Ha'Rav Shalom Arush, a leading teacher in the Breslov community with thousands of students worldwide. He focuses his teachings on the concept of Emuna, or faith in Gd, and how to serve The Almighty through prayer and joy in contemporary times.

As the world evolves and the tides of modernization reach mind-numbing speed, we find it increasingly difficult to slow down and focus on the essentials in life like prayer, humility, love and true joy. Through his teachings in the classical texts of Rebbi Nachman and his student Rabi Natan, Rav Lazer will guide us on a disarming and witty path to a soulful and zesty Judaism that can enrich our modern lives and allow us the much needed space to create a meaningful and healthy lifestyle enlightened by the wisdom and joy of Chassidus.

ted

And we are back with our 3rd (!!!) annual TED Shavous all-night learning program. Instead of one, two or three long lectures, we'll have a series of eight short talks given by the brilliant, talented and supremely interesting members of our Shul.

We're not looking for professional speakers; just people who are fluent in a certain subject and possess the skills to deliver it well.

Do you know someone who would be PERFECT?
