Here is my daily update, some COVID-19 information, some other useful information! Please forward as widely as you would like.
I want to hear from you, contact me anytime.

If you're reading this because it was forwarded to you, or you saw it on Facebook and would like to receive it yourself, email me here to subscribe.

Today's 2:30pm press conference from the Governor should be one to watch, with announcements about the Stay Home order.

My heart is with Minnesota today, for the memory of George Floyd and the pain their community is feeling.

Mukiltean of the Day

The Mukiltean of May 29, 2020 is Andrew Mott!

Andrew Mott is an engineer in Mukilteo who has been creating 3D printed face masks! He's distributed 80 masks for the community. He keeps some at the end of his driveway for anyone to pick up. He has made a kids version, and has a video of the creation process (good chance for kids to check out 3D printing, as well!).

Andrew is awesome for doing this for his neighbors and community. Make sure you have your facial covering available for all indoor use outside the home in his honor.

Do you know someone who deserves to be the Mukiltean of the Day? Nominate them!

Getting to Safe Toolkit Now Available

The City of Everett spearheaded an awesome effort at creating this toolkit for businesses to "get to safe" for reopening. It is available here, and is a must for businesses.

Food and Other Resources

Catholic Community Services (CCS) has received funding from the Community Foundation of Snohomish County to distribute emergency baby diapers, wipes, and formula to any Snohomish County family who has been impacted by COVID-19.
Families can call 206-487-2414 or 425-760-1895 to find the closest distribution site.

CCS and the Pacific Coast Fruit Company have partnered to launch a free farm-to-family program. Fresh perishable foods will be available to the community on Friday, May 29 at the Faith Lutheran Church’s drive-thru food bank in Everett (6708 Cady Road in Everett).

Homage Senior Services provides delicious, hearty meals throughout Snohomish County for older adults who are 60+. For more information, email nutrition@homage.org or call 425.347.1229 or 800.824.2183. Full list here.

Finally, if your family is one that receives free/reduced lunch (43% of Washington students do), you'll be able to receive Pandemic EBT food benefits over the summer, to compensate for the meals kids might have gotten at school. Contact your school if you are thinking you qualify now but did not qualify before to apply for free/reduced lunch.

Applying for Phase 2

The Snohomish Health District and the County Council took steps to apply for phase 2 approval this week. The Health District is holding a special meeting at 10am on Friday (zoom meeting details: Meeting ID: 989 9391 8437, agenda is here).

Today's press conference by the Governor might also change the landscape for phasing and applying for openings, as well as the Stay Home order timing which currently expires Sunday night.

WSF Ferry Construction Continues

From WSF: While many parts of the economy remain suspended or are slowly opening up, work on the Mukilteo Multimodal Terminal Project is moving swiftly with COVID safety practices in place. Starting June 1 and running for two to three weeks, trucks will haul in materials to lay down the new holding lanes. Trucks will use the special haul route that passes through the southern end of the old holding lanes and into the job site. Flaggers will coordinate the flow of trucks exiting the job site with the queuing ferry traffic. This work will take place from 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays.

These are not their usual holding lanes, either. They're a layer cake of materials designed to treat storm water before it leaves the site or enters Puget Sound. The holding lanes will be constructed of a special porous concrete called permeable concrete that allows rainwater to pass through and into a thick layer of sand that filters it. Then the water finds its way to an under drain system, the geo-membrane liner. This base layer collects and channels storm water into drain pipes so the filtered water can enter the Sound.

Our new Mukilteo Terminal will also honor the history of the site as the home of the Coast Salish people and the spot where the tribes and U.S. Government signed the 1855 Point Elliott Treaty. During design consultation, the tribes asked WSF to make the terminal welcoming from land and water. These images on the elevator glass, designed by Tulalip Master Carver James Madison, will welcome all who come ashore. The east elevator is shown above; the west elevator features a similar design by Madison with a woman in the background. The special glass was installed over the past two weeks.

In other news, the final WSF run to Mukilteo will now leave Clinton at 11:45pm, and depart Mukilteo at 12:15am,

Student Loan Help

If someone in your family has lost a job or is working less, colleges may be able to provide more financial aid for current or incoming students.

Colleges may adjust financial aid based on a student’s or parent’s job loss, reduced income, loss of benefits (like child support), or even extraordinary medical or dental bills. Each situation is different, and colleges’ requirements vary, so students should contact the financial aid office to talk about options:

• If you’ve already filed a 2020-21 FAFSA or WASFA, talk to the financial aid office about your situation.
• If you haven’t applied for financial aid, it’s not too late. Submit your application, then follow up with the college to discuss changes.

Learn more about financial aid appealsand planning for the future during COVID on the Washington Student Achievement Council website.
