Skivvys create dance partners

2017Besemsokkie078

Ruben Potgieter admires his partner.

On Wednesday, 11 January, the first day of school kicked off with excitement when Merensky gathered en masse to witness a tidal wave of grade 8’s, on the first leg of their journey to become blue blooded Plasies.

As tradition dictates, the 2017 Merensky skivvys once again amazed with their innovative approach to create partners with brooms, mops and feather dusters for the first school dance of the year.

This dance was the first step, to be followed by the unique Moo-Poo experience and Skivvy concert. At the end of the concert every Skivvy will ring the traditional cow bell as part of their inauguration – a privilege they will again only experience at the end of grade 12.

During the Interhouse meet on Thursday, 11 January at Merensky High School no present records were safe. Athletes were eager to make 2017 their best season yet. No less than 39 records were broken.

Congratulations to the grade 11’s who won the day. Runners-up were the grade 8’s, proving their commitment and team spirit from the word “go”.

Best junior field athletes were Nikita Pohl and Janco Coetzee, while Zuleike Ferns and Ignatius Stucki reigned on the track.

At senior level, Sancha van Niekerk once again was a force to be reckoned with, by being the best girl on the track. Newcomer, Reuben Caroto, inspired with his first performance as a Plasie and won the best boy on the track title.

On the field, Lourentia van Dyk, with her steady performance and Marnus Grobler, also a new Plasie, reigned supreme.

A total of 33km over rough and wet terrain proved a challenge, as some bridges were washed away and more difficult alternative routes had to be taken.

Merensky old boy excels

Doctor of Philosophy-web

Dr Christiaan Labuschagne

Plasieland is proud to congratulate Christiaan Labuschagne with his recent doctorate in Philosophy, with specialisation in Genetics. Christiaan completed his secondary education at Merensky, class of 2000.

He obtained a BSc degree in 2003, a BSc Hons degree in 2004 and an MSc in 2007, at the University of Pretoria. He started his professional career in 2006 as part of Inqaba Biotec’s Sanger sequencing technical team where he is currently Production Manager. He is responsible for overseeing services and production and for providing several other services. In his leisure time he likes to travel and he plays the piano and cello.

Christiaan’s thesis, THE APPLICATION OF NEXT GENERATION TECHNIQUES IN CONSERVATION GENETICS, is focused on the African penguin and the white rhinoceros. Through the use of molecular tools, investigations on genetic management and reintroductions in the African penguin and white rhinoceros are now possible.

Blended learning development plan

After a disappointing start to blended learning with our previous service provider, we cut all ties in October 2016. We are now dealing directly with the creators of the SchoolLMS software, Ekasi IT. A LMS (Learner Management System) developed by Ekasi IT will focus mainly on four apps namely Teacher app, Learner app, Management app and Parent app. The Learner app will allow learners to connect to virtual classes created by educators, receive notes and interact with the e-lesson. The Teacher app will be used to create virtual classrooms, distribute information and presentations and even administer short tests. The Parent app will allow parents to stay in touch with what is happening in the classroom. This programme is still under development, but is unique and promises to change the eLearning landscape.

The following will be phased in during 2017:
• Installing of the SchoolLMS on learner tablets.
• Supplying parents with a manual to install the parental app
• Finalisation and implementation of the timetable app.
• By the end of term one educators and learners will engage in interactive learning.
• Receiving general notifications.

Blended learning is an ongoing process and we are excited to be part of this ground breaking development in education.
