Open Theme - What Do You Want to Change About the World?

Young Playwrights for Change offers students a new way to explore and express how they feel about important issues. It gives them a voice and lets them speak to their peers and the adults in their lives in a new way. In our first Young Playwrights for Change project, we gave middle school students the opportunity to submit short plays that tackled the subject of bullying. For Year 2, we asked the question, What is Family? What we got in return were many fun, creative, and inspiring plays. For Year 3, we are letting you choose the topic in our Open Theme - What Do You Want To Change About the World?

This year, you may let your students focus on any issue they like such as income inequity or peer pressure; or you may choose to focus your contest on a single issue such as bullying or the environment. Think about asking your student playwrights these or similar questions:

Are you sick of stereotypes of teens and the way some adults treat teens?
Do you want to stamp out racism? Homophobia? Gender inequality?
What would you do to change your school to make it a better environment for everyone?
Do you wish your peers judge people less by what they look like?
