MEET "SANJAYS SUPER TEAM" DIRECTOR SANJAY PATEL AT CAAMFEST 2016

Sanjay

I was showing him a little drawing I did of what my dad did every morning. I did a drawing of him praying at a shrine, and in the same drawing there is little Sanjay, you know, worshipping his Gods that were on the TV. John saw that and was like: ‘That’s great! Let’s make that. Just tell your story, tell the truth of you and your father.'” – Sanjay Patel

CAAMFest 2016 starts in one week with the San Francisco premiere of Pamela Tom's documentary TYRUS. This fascinating portrait of 105 year old Chinese American artist Tyrus Wong also explores Wong’s broad creative success—including fine art paintings, movie studio story boards, greeting cards—and in his later years, handmade kites. The visuals include 80 years of rare and many never before seen pieces, dating back to Wong’s early years at Otis and among the Art Students’ League led by Stanton Macdonald-Wright, who encouraged Wong to combine Chinese aesthetics with modern art. Follow TYRUS with a feast for the senses at our Opening Night Gala at the Asian Art Museum. Learn more and buy tickets here.

Launched in 2014, our Muslim Youth Voices Project is a three-year national initiative that seeks to amplify young people’s expression and celebration of Muslim cultures by giving them the essential tools to tell their stories and the stories of their communities and share them with the national public. In the second year of this signature CAAM program, the youth explore the universal truths of growing up. Acclaimed filmmaker Musa Syeed returns to help young people craft their unique stories that disintegrate the borders built on stereotypes.
