Hello !!

Happy Spring!

Although snow remains at my house as I write this afternoon! But soon we'll be out gardening, walking and enjoying more outdoor activities. If walking is something you'd like to enjoy -- or enjoy in more challenging terrain -- but lack the confidence, consider the Walking with Poles Class coming in May. And think about diversifying your exercise program -- your brain (and body) will thank you. See the article below.

Exercise: A Supercharged 401(k) for the Brain!

That's what Neuroscientist Wendy Suzuki calls it in her TED Talks

Different types of exercise are now being recognized as affecting different areas of the brain, which in turn influence various skills and abilities needed for healthy living. And doing more than one type of exercise is even better. Engaging in both aerobic and strength training, for instance, provides greater improvement in executive functioning than either alone. Improving the coordination of movement seems to boost our attention. Working memory, holding onto information and manipulating it, can be influenced by activities that challenge our proprioception while requiring some thinking or navigation. Like walking on a balance beam or walking/climbing in a challenging and unfamiliar environment. Maybe that’s why dancing is so beneficial.

In addition to the graphic below, check out this article: New Finding: Different Types of Exercise Affect Different Parts of the Brain. And then go mix it up!!

We don't usually thing of the Feldenkrais Method® as strength-building. When we use ourselves well, however, we often feel stronger, better able to use our arms and legs, able to move with power and grace.
Improve the efficient use of your torso:
• Balance the use of your front and back muscles
• Discover easier movement for your arms and legs
• Sense your skeletal alignment to stand and walk tall
