Professional Development Series

Online | On Demand | On Your Budget

Develop your teaching skills and gain valuable new perspectives through a new series of monthly 90-minute Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshops, offered 100% online. Each month, we'll feature in-house or guest presenters who will address the most up-to-date, relevant aspects of Dance for Parkinson's teaching practice today.

Join us live via Zoom or access recordings of each session on demand, on your own schedule.

Participation, through online or on-demand platforms, earns you Dance for PD training credits toward certification or recertification, just like our in-person workshops.

We hope you can join us!

Sessions 6a and 6b: Monday, April 19 and Sunday, April 25

An infinite spring: sourcing movement ideas from choreographic repertory

A two-part CPD experience

Live via Zoom or On Demand

Mountains 6

Dancers from the NYC Dance for PD program participate in the 2014 performance of L'Allegro Movement Project at the Mark Morris Dance Center.

About the workshop

In honor of Parkinson's Awareness Month, and in celebration of Mark Morris Dance Group's "L'Allegro Week" (which pays homage to L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato, one of Mark Morris' signature works), April's professional development experience will be a bit different from our previous sessions.

Through this CPD - taking place in two parts live or On Demand - you'll see inspiring, tangible examples of how choreographic repertory can be translated and adapted to a Dance for PD setting.

Part I - April 19
Join live or view On Demand the L'Allegro-themed Dance for PD community class led by David Leventhal on Monday, April 19 from 11 AM - 12:15 PM US Eastern Time. By building an entire class around a single piece, David will demonstrate ways to think creatively about choreographic repertory, providing examples of how to find the essence of the original movement and foster a spirit of exploration and discovery. After class, breakout rooms will provide those attending the live class with an opportunity to meet community participants from around the world..

Part II - April 25
Join live or view On Demand our L'Allegro Movement Project event on Sunday, April 25 from 2 - 3:15 PM US Eastern Time. This webinar will open with the screening of a rare 28-minute documentary, directed by Toronto-based director Ella Cooper and her team of young filmmakers, that tells the story of how teaching artists from the NYC Dance for PD® program worked with partners in Toronto to create an inter-generational exploration of L’Allegro that inspired artistic discovery while building bridges among local communities. After the screening, a panel discussion will feature Ms. Cooper, Sarah Robichaud (founder and director of Dancing with Parkinson's Canada), and community dancers from Brooklyn who have performed adapted versions of L'Allegro. Topping things off, we'll screen the world premiere of The Mountains Project, which features more than 75 people living with Parkinson’s dancing together in a virtual adapted staging of a section of Morris’ dance.

As with past CPD workshops, both events will be available live or On Demand. However, please note that there is very limited space for the April 19 class - live participation is available on a first come first served basis and may only be available On Demand. As well, due to the special nature of this month's events, the registration deadline for LIVE participation is Friday, April 16 at 5 p.m. EDT. After this time, only On Demand access will be available. On Demand resources will be available on or around April 28.

In honor of this auspicious month, we are offering these experiences at no charge. In lieu of tuition, we ask that you contribute to a local Parkinson's organization in your community or to Dance for PD. However, registration is required. If you have already registered for the April 19 class through a different portal, please note that fact on the CPD registration form.

Join us as we explore what's possible when you source ideas from choreographic repertory.

Access and fees

These experiences are offered tuition-free. If this possibility is available to you, we ask that you make a donation in support of a Parkinson's organization that serves your community, or to Dance for PD.

Due to the special nature of this month's events, the registration deadline for LIVE participation is Friday, April 16 at 5 p.m. EDT. After this time, only On Demand access will be available.
