What is Early Literacy?

Early literacy is everything a child knows about reading and writing before he or she can read or write.

Why is Early Literacy Important?

Reading together helps kids learn to recognize letters, become aware of how to hold a book, turn the page, start at the beginning, expand their vocabulary, and begin to develop language skills.

Reading

Reading together increases vocabulary and general knowledge. It helps children learn how printed words look and how books work.

Activity for the Month - Picture Walk

Just like adults use context clues to read unfamiliar text, children use illustrations. Going through a picture walk before reading a book will help your child understand what is going on in the story.

Reading book with child

Choose a book to read and start with the cover. Talk to your child about the illustrations and the title. What could the book be about? Move on to the story, looking at the illustrations to identify characters, plot, and setting. Make predictions as you go through the book. What is going to happen? Get your child excited about the story!
If you have any prior knowledge about the subject of the book, talk about it. For example, if the book is about a farm, what do you and your child know about farms? Use your knowledge as you go through the story. Do all of this before you read the book.
