JAVA VILLAGE NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2022

Giving Tuesday: the global day of action for doing good

GivingTuesday

Tuesday November 29 will again be Giving Tuesday, the global day of action for doing good held on the first Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. We would like to ask you to play your part by donating to Java Village.

Our special request this year is to make a contribution towards the learning centre in the village. The centre reaches out to the youngsters of the village by providing them with English lessons and computer training. Extra laptops are always needed there as laptops in the tropical climate don't have a very long life. Your contribution can help us provide the learning centre with new learning material.

Giving Tuesday marks the beginning of a traditional period of giving, the season for giving to people and social organisations that desperately need help. See also #Giving Tuesday

Strong earthquake also hits Cisarua

The strong earthquake that hit West Java on November 21 also caused severe damage to the village of Cisarua. Luckily no severe casualties have been reported but several buildings were gravely damaged, among one of the primary schools. It was very fortunate that there were no children in the school at the time of the earthquake as the school had already finished. It's too early to say what the total damage is in the village, but we will keep you informed. Our thoughts are with the people of Indonesia and we hope that the number of casualties will not rise.

Generous donation for Java Village

Java Village received a very generous donation from the art gallery Tijd voor Kunst (Time for Art) which hosted an art exhibition in the historic building of Duinzigt in Oegstgeest, during Open Monuments Day last September. Our board members Sonja and Ties were present to receive the generous cheque. Thank you very much Marian from Tijd voor Kunst and Sabine, host at Duinzigt who made this event possible.

Here they are: our new students!

SaS 22 23 3

In the beginning of September the ten new SaS pupils were able to start their secondary school education. We wish Silva, Raima, Siti, Amalia, Nadia, Alvina, Desti, Siti Zahra, Sri Gantini and Siti Nurhanifah the best of luck and we hope that their education will contribute to a happy and successful life.

The first three students of the Maria Peters Scholarship have also enrolled in the second phase of their secondary school education. Hani and Hasya started at the SMA (senior high school) and Raisha at the SMK (vocational high school) in Sukabumi. We wish them a very bright future.

The scholarship was founded in memory of Maria Peters, one of the first supporters of Java Village, who sadly passed away in 2016. In honour of her, her family took the initiative, together with Java Village, to establish this special grant for excellent students. You can find additional information about this scholarship and how you can support on our website. The costs for senior high school or vocational school are higher than those for junior high school, because the government asks a school fee for the second phase of secondary schooling. This means that the total costs for three years are €1650 (€550 per year per pupil), compared to €450 for three years of junior high school (€150 per year; there is no school fee for SMP, junior high school). Java Village has been supporting junior high school students for the last fourteen years through its Sponsor a Student (SaS) programme (see below). Understandably, senior high school is an even more heavy financial burden, and support for these students is highly appreciated.

Become a SaS Sponsor!

Please do not forget our Sponsor a Student project. This ongoing project supports young pupils so that they can continue their education after primary school. The village doesn't have a secondary school and many families can't afford the cost of going to a school outside the village. The Sponsor a Student project helps these families. Since the beginning of the project in 2008 Java Village has already helped 130 pupils to go to a junior high school. You can support a student by donating €12,50 per month or €150 per year. Please go to our website for additional information about how you can become a SaS sponsor.
