Hello again,

Whenever September comes around I feel extra grateful that I don't have to go back to school, one of the major perks of being an adult with a college degree. But I can't help but feel energized by the back-to-school vibe, the feeling that I have a clean slate and it's time to try a little harder. Also, buy a new notebook. Just because.

One of the things I've been working on is trying to come up with a new pink glaze. I've always wanted a pink glaze that was was like an icy coating of frosting. But not TOO pink! More like something you might find on the underside of a magnolia petal. A soft and clear pink. Glaze mixing and mastery is not my talent, but I thankfully have access to a glaze master through my local clay supplier, who has been creating samples for me and understands what I'm looking for. Pink has a reputation for frivolity, and is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's a complex color with many underlying shades that can change its overall character. The pink glaze I use now has a bit too much grey in it, making it a dense pink that I've always wanted to lighten up a bit. So if you like pink the way I like pink, stay tuned! I will have some great new pink work coming soon.

Some of you know that I am crazy obsessed with paper cut art. If you are not sure what that is please click this link to see my favorite paper cut artist, Elsa Mora. I do my own paper cut art as a hobby, and I can't describe how satisfying it is to cut a piece of paper with in exacto knife and be left with a pretty design when I'm done. It's the best kind of meditation.

I'll be doing my first installation of paper cut art in the window of Marion and Rose's Workshop, a boutique in downtown Oakland. The theme is on the annual migration of the monarch butterflies, and we will be giving away free milkweed-- the favorite food of the monarchs-- until it runs out. The installation will be up for about a month, so if you are in or near Oakland, be sure to stop by and see it. And don't miss the reception, from 5-7 on October 3 (First Friday).

I have lots more to tell you but I'm going to save some of it for later. I have some more of my new work that will be coming out in about a month, and if you want to be the first to know, be sure to follow me on facebook or instagram, which is where I generally post things when they are fresh. I'm back to regular firings so you can also order my pottery on my website, day or night. You can also keep up with me on my blog, where I have been writing more lately, mostly about the challenges of being an artist in the world today. Good times!

Happy Fall to everyone,
Whitney
