Hi Member,

This week we have two new blog posts - one is all about my belief that if your clients really knew why you do what you do, the time and effort you go to improve your skills and expertise, etc. then perhaps they may not be so quick to criticise or complain (Transparency builds trust..). The second post is thanks to VetPrac and asks the question (amongst others) why don't more female vets become surgeons? to Dr Sue Gibbons who became a surgical specialist in 2006.

You'll also find a link to an interesting 10 minute video from Dr Dave Nicol in which he outlines the top 5 things strong veterinary leaders needs to keep their team happy and I've also featured a post that was popular on social media during the week. It lists six steps to follow when you need to have that difficult talk with someone in your team who's performance isn't up to standard. They're never easy conversations, but handled the right way can be positive for everyone involved.

Our aim is to help you - save time, connect & discover!

Enjoy your reading :)

Transparency builds trust in your veterinary practice

Transparency builds trust in your veterinary practice

Every time I see a negative comment from a pet owner about their veterinarian, my heart drops. I know that almost everyone who works in a veterinary practice is there for the right reasons and it’s rarely to earn lots of money. And yet the negative comments continue. Why?

Why Don’t More Female Veterinarians Become Surgeons? (Guest Post)

Have you ever thought about why, despite veterinary science being a female-dominated profession, there are relatively few female veterinary surgical specialists and even less female veterinary orthopaedic surgeons?

Freewheelin' Ep16: What 5 Things Does A Leader Need Within Their Own Practice For A Happy Efficient Team? (Dr Dave Nicol)

In this 10 minute video Dr Dave Nicol outlines the top 5 things a strong veterinary leader need to keep their team happy:

1. Have a long term vision

Why are you doing what you do? What's your unique selling proposition? Knowing this will help to attract the right people to your practice.

2. Work with your vision and values to recruit the right fit for your practice

Hire to fit your core values not just for skills alone.

3. Set the standards

Walk the walk, talk the talk and most importantly have everything documented.
The standard you walk past is the standard you're agreeing to.

4. Leaders have to be good at listening

You need to listen to what's going on, get feedback and listen to your team's needs. Two ears, one mouth is a good guide.

5. Give recognition and praise

Especially important for Millenials in your team. Practice giving feedback both good and bad.

Bonus Tip: be humble, honest and give yourself permission to fail

6 Ways to Criticize with Kindness (Uncharted Veterinary Conference)

"Sometimes we need to tell people things that aren’t easy to hear....If we are going to have to talk to someone about a behavior that is hurting (their career), the best thing we can do is have the talk early — before the behavior becomes ingrained or the damage becomes career-limiting — with kindness and compassion."

Here are 6 steps to take:

1. Choose the time and location
2. Start with open-ended questions
3. Re-state the person's position clearly and with compassion
4. Point out commonality
5. Share what you learned
6. Respond with criticism

"Success in delivering criticism is largely determined by the steps leading up to the actual feedback. Once it’s time to deliver the news, however, it’s best to deliver it clearly and directly so it’s understood."
