Ancient Wisdom

Hello ,

Greetings from one of my favourite places.. I'm in Bali :)
Last week I was telling you about an Auspicious Diwali, from Kolkata, India.. and the latest heartwarming news from the Children's home we support there.
You can read about it here.

From Kolkata, I took the midnight flight up to KL and changed for the flight to Denpasar, Bali.
I managed to board the Kolkata to KL flight last, still feeling a touch emotional about the children's home. Seeing all those kids with hope in their faces (and so happy with very little), have made me resolve to do more. We decided to get a computer, fast internet installed, and an IT teacher to come twice a week, also an arts and crafts teacher to see if any of the children have creative skills. I'll keep you updated.

Anyway as I get on the plane, still thinking about this (I always book seat F1 the front window seat if possible) I see.. sat in my seat is this posh Australian kid about six I guess. "Would you mind if my son sits in the window?" his mother asks. The kid had an entitled smirk on his middleclass face.. and I did something quite unforgivable .. (as I inevitably compared him to the Indian orphans) I heard myself say "Nope, sorry.. that's my seat". Well the kid didn't want to move, started to cry, the mother dragged him to the aisle seat where he proceeded to have a tantrum flinging a water bottle to the floor in a rage. The mother just ignored him.. and then me.. for the whole flight, the air hostess must have decided that I was an evil English oger and "forgot" to bring me drinks or food. Oh well.. such is life :)
Note to self, try and be nice to kids.. always.

So now I'm on the magical island of Bali.. there is a volcano here, threatening to erupt and it's scaring people away. On the flight from KL to Denpasar, I had no trouble with kids.. with anyone, I was the only person in the first six rows of the plane. The traffic is unusually light and checking in the hotel, they are extra grateful to see me. I'm given a letter, from the Island governor.. reassuring all visitors that Bali is safe, that the Volcano will only effect within 12 kilometers of the eruption and that the government will guarantee to find away to get me home if the airport is closed due to ash. Reassured? .. after reading the letter I'm not! But secretly, obviously hoping no-one is hurt, but wouldn't it be great to be here when the thing goes up. I'll keep you updated.

Last time I was here was six months back.. some things I ordered then have just arrived in Sheffield.
This morning up early we go to Sukawati market. The wood carving market.. people from outlying villages bring unfinished carvings here to sell to the islands retailers who often finish the products off themselves. But in recent years it has attracted exporters who contract families of artisans to make their designs here. Last time I was here, I got one of our more switched on suppliers to make us a nice mahogany tray that would hold a Soap Loaf to enhance the displays (you can see it here)..
Only six months on and the design is all over the market.. same happened with soap dishes, and our ideas for puzzle boxes. Do I get upset? No of course not, it's flattering to be copied, and to help propagate more trade for the artisans.

Anyway, hopefully I'll bring you more news from Bali next week (if I survive).
Meanwhile it's HERE.. it's Halloween.. we are planning a party next week.. more news also.
and I think I can safely say the clocks go back this weekend..
and when the clocks go back, it's usually all systems go for Christmas. Now is the time to stock up..

I have to apologise about bath bomb shortages. Really we had planned to be well ahead this year.
We'd trained more people, running night shifts, and tried to build up stocks.
But a combination of being hit with some huge corporate orders, world shortage of some raw materials, and general surge in demand leveled our plans like a volcano eruption.
However the fight back continues, and the production team are pulling out all the stops and assure me that we will be meeting stock requirements within days.

Take care .. have a great Halloween weekend. And thank you for your support.

David
