Sandefurs

A Note From Mr. Sandefur

Lion family,

It is hard to imagine that a month ago today we welcomed our students back to campus for the start of the new academic year. The past month has been full of exciting moments of learning, achievement, and fellowship as well as a few opportunities for us to grow and learn from. As we continue to navigate unchartered waters within this global pandemic, we remain committed to in-person biblically-based educational delivery for our students.

Due to the continued rising cases of Covid-19 in our area, I continue to strongly recommend that families consider the choice to wear masks when in classrooms, hallways, etc. While we still believe in honoring parent choice, along with Governor Lee’s Executive Order, we do want to continue to seek safety for our students and school community. According to the governance that we follow regarding contact tracing, if close contact (within three feet for fifteen minutes or more) occurs and both parties are wearing masks, then the non-ill student would not have to quarantine. Therefore, we continue to encourage masks wearing for those who are willing to do so in order to keep as many students on campus as possible.

As we approach the Labor Day holiday, it is my hope that each and every one of you will be able to enjoy some time with family and a brief break. I look forward to celebrating our Homecoming festivities with our school family next week and hope to see you in the days ahead.

In Christ Alone,

Jeremy Sandefur
President

Love Where We Live

The next opportunity we have to partner with our community is a benefit for the the 434 Coffee family. The owners of 434 Coffee are Jason and Jynnifer Russell. Jason has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and been in the ICU. A Javapalooza has been planned on Saturday, September 11 from 10AM to 4PM at 434 Boyds Creek Highway. The Javaplooza will include food, crafts & artisans, music, and a silent auction. We would love to see as many Lion families at this event as possible as we meet the needs of those around us!

Thank you for helping us Love Where We Live!

Econ Week

Econ Week: September 13th-17th

Our high school economics class students will be hosting "Econ Week" September 13th - 17th. This activity is a "free enterprise" experience for the students in basic business lessons (budget, competition, profit/loss, etc.). Students will set up "stores" inside and on the walkway entering the cafeteria to sell a variety of goods during lunch, (some groups may choose to sell before/after school. Past stores have sold baked goods, pizza, lunch menu items, doughnuts, etc. Elementary and middle school students will be offered only pre-packaged items along with canned/bottled drinks. Prices generally range from $0.50 - $3.00. Students are always eager to buy these items, so you may want to consider reminding them to bring some extra cash during the week. Students keep half of the profits with the other half benefitting approved charities.

Elementary Clubs

TKA Elementary Families,

We are excited to announce that our TKA Elementary club opportunities will begin very soon. Each club will have a fall section and a spring section.

The fall section will begin the week of September 13th and end December 10th. The spring section will begin the week of January 31st and end April 22nd. Registration for the spring sections will be shared second semester.

Each club will include a $20 participation fee to cover resources needed for club activities. Unfortunately, each club has a maximum number of 20 students. Our STEAM and Whiz Kidz Clubs will have a maximum number of 15 students. This is the first year offering a majority of these elementary clubs. Once we evaluate how this year goes, we can make changes if needed for the following school year.

Please review the club description and registration link. Again, we will select the first participants until the maximum number is reached. We ask that you consider all options and register for clubs that fit your schedule for the year. To be fair to our club instructors, we ask that you choose a club where your child will be able to participate and attend 90% of the semester club activities.

All sign up forms will close Friday, September 3rd. Our club teachers will be in communication with participant families for their club area by Friday, September 10th. This communication will include the next steps prior to the first meeting the following week.

We are very blessed to have such wonderful teachers who are excited to provide these enriching opportunities after school hours to further enhance our elementary learning.

Blessings,
Kelly Sullivan

Book Club 1

Book Club (Grades 1-5)

Book Club will provide students with the opportunity to engage with texts deeply in a relaxed fun environment. Through group discussion and hands-on activities, students will practice age appropriate comprehension skills such as character analysis, distinguishing literary themes, understanding the elements of plot development, and using textual evidence. Book club will also provide time for readers to share book recommendations with each other, through book talks and book lists, in order to deepen their self-knowledge as a reader and broaden their range of choice in reading material. Reading choice is vital to developing a lifelong love of reading. Choice of club texts will be determined in the first few meetings of the club so readers can have input and ownership of their experience.

 Visitor Policy

TKA Visitor Policy

In order to help maintain a safe and instructionally based learning environment for our students, all visitors for middle and high school must enter through the front door of the Anderson Building and sign in in the middle/high school office in order to receive a visitor's pass. All visitors for elementary must enter the front door of the Ogle Building in order to receive a visitor's pass. This pass should be visible at all times so that TKA faculty and staff know that you have checked in at the office.

Our doors are open to visitors, but please call ahead of time to schedule conferences with your child’s teachers. This will prevent interruptions to instruction and the loss of the valuable learning time of our students. Adults will not be allowed to wander the halls of the building or hold conferences with teachers during instructional times.

TKA family lunch visitors should follow the above procedure. Lunch tickets are $5 each.

Students who are not enrolled at TKA are not permitted to visit TKA students during the school day which includes lunch.

This policy has been developed in order to help maintain a safe and instructional focused environment at school each day. Any visitor who does not meet these expectations may be asked to leave school grounds.

Covid

Covid-19 Procedures

While we are excited to offer in-person education, we must continue to maintain a safe learning environment for all students, faculty/staff, and additional stakeholders.

To do so, we will be working closely with the Sevier County Health Department in regards to Covid-19 protocols (https://seviercountycovidhelp.com/).
