No Mentor? No Problem

Those who are in the know, know that we at Career Incubator have been working hard to match our community members with a mentor. But you may also be aware of just how difficult it can sometimes be to find a good one.

So in this week's issue of Career Capital, we wanted to bring you some advice we found from Deborah Norville, Inside Edition Anchor at CBS News, who talks about what to do when there is no one to act as a mentor.

One reads everywhere about the benefits of mentoring. Research indicates people who are mentored get more salary bumps and get promoted five times more often. But what if you don’t have a mentor? Can you get ahead in your career without one? For me, the answer was yes. The way to do it is create your own personal "network" of wise people to follow and try to emulate.

Follow and emulate people you admire
Take chances to get noticed
Educate yourself
Pay it forward

The UN Young Professionals Program is Hiring!! - New York, NY

The Department of State is pleased to announce that the United States has been invited to participate in this year’s UN Young Professionals Program (YPP). The YPP provides young professionals interested in entry-level positions the opportunity to start a career at the United Nations. Jason Munyan, an American working at the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) who got his start through the YPP, says “The YPP is probably the most straightforward way to start a career with the United Nations.”

To qualify for the program, you must meet certain criteria established by the UN -- hold at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, be fluent in English or French, be 32 years old or younger as of December 31, 2015, and be a national of a participating country, such as the United States.
