Inspiration & Guidance: Writing Exercise- Past & Present- Your Identity Arc

As my students know- I'm fascinated by Identity and give exercises in my workshops to investigate it, since it's a powerful way to reveal our core: Who we are, where we come from, our choices and why we believe what we believe. This exercise can also be applied to fictional characters- And may also provide an arc for you or your character.

Writing Exercise Instructions:
These writing exercises should be done as spontanous writing- let go of trying to write well and don't edit or censor. Allow yourself to write wild and messy. Look at it as an investigation and a tool for discovery. For this exercise- don't read ahead.

Writing Prep:
Close your eyes, take some full deep breathes- make sure your stomach is expanding on the inhales. Breathe through the chatter and let go of obligation and perfection with each exhale. Breathe in and let yourself slow down with each breathe. See how much you can release of the day, as you exhale. Being relaxed helps center you and allows you to connect with that deep, quiet voice that is your muse/creative impulse.

Writing Exercise:
1. Start with this phrase- I am...
And as fast as you can, without over-thinking it- Make a list of everything that comes to you, based on this prompt

1. Now make another list, starting with "I was..."
2. Look at these 2 lists and notice the portrait that emerges of you or your character.
3. You can pick one item from each list to write about
or--
Write about connections, parallels or juxtapositions that interest you from each list and write about one (or more) of the "I am..." that directly link to one (or more) of the "I was" as a way to chart the trajectory of you or your character.

See where this takes you and don't worry if you go off on a tangent. Write for 5-10 minutes, or longer if you'd like.

If you'd like more writing exercises to spark ideas, give you guidance or exercises/assignments tailored to a story/project you're working on...
I offer coaching and story or script critiques.

In the weekly workshops, we do an in-class exercise to spark ideas or help investigate your story. The exercises can also be tailored to a story or character you're working on.

Whether you are tapped out or yet to be tapped, Terrie S. will get that maple syrup of the muse flowing. Terrie really helped me out of a creative winter. I recommend her class to any writer or performer. Heather Woodbury, Obie Award-Winner

I was never able to fully integrate my acting and writing until I found Terrie's class. Terrie's nurturing spirit, insight and playful curiosity helped me to develop work I didn't realize I had in me. She helped me write material that mattered, and perform with confidence and vulnerability. I ended up with a solo show and a book deal, and it all came out of Terrie's class. It's the best work I've done in years. -Susan Isaacs, Angry Conversations With God- book & Solo-Show
