What is Early Literacy?

Early literacy is everything a child knows about reading and writing before he or she can read or write.

Why is Early Literacy Important?

Reading together helps kids learn to recognize letters, become aware of how to hold a book, turn the page, start at the beginning, expand their vocabulary, and begin to develop language skills.

Playing

Play helps children think symbolically, to understand that spoken and written words can stand for real objects and experiences. Play also helps children express themselves and put thoughts into words.

Activity for the Month - Shapes

As your child gets older they will start to recognize shapes and realize that they see them all over the world. Give your child blocks to play with from a young age. Talk to them about the shapes and what you can find in your home that is that shape. As they get older, ask them about the shape and what they can find at home that is that shape. Teach them they can build with the blocks too! Kids will pick up on stacking quickly and show them they can create buildings, words, animals, so many things out of blocks.
