Sherri Says....

Hi Friends,
Summer is almost behind us and time to think cooler weather and being outdoors again. What better way than to join us Sunday, November 9 at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort for our 11th Annual Take a Hike (or walk) for BAG IT Event? If you have not supported this event in the past, now is the time! There are hikes of different lengths/abilities along the Ventana Trail offering amazing vistas of Tucson or a peaceful and serene meditation walk led around the resort grounds. Not a fan of either? Join everyone for a fun silent auction and raffle followed by a sumptuous brunch at the resort. What could be better? Our theme! We are celebrating Homecomings this year! Yes, the UA has its Homecoming the day before, so come celebrate theirs or yours! Wear your favorite school shirt and be ready to shake some pom poms! Dan Marries from KOLD will lead the celebration. Expect to find tailgating surprises in the silent auction and raffle, at the brunch buffet, and certainly at the live auction where a Tucson Tailgate To Go!, or Cat Caper for Two will be auctioned off.

Can’t make it for some reason? We will surely miss you, but you can still support BAG IT through our Sponsor a Bag Raffle – each $30 donation gets you into a drawing for a $300 Visa gift card.

So no matter what, you can choose to support BAG IT. You may have personally received BAG IT with your diagnosis or someone in your family or a friend may have received the resource. We provide these resources so people can Fight The Fear! and cope with a cancer diagnosis and treatment a bit easier. We have served your community for over ten years and reached over 50,000. We need your help to continue our work. Come join the fun to contribute or simply go to the website and make a donation.

See you there!

Virginia

As I began my breast cancer journey in the fall of 2012, I felt quite helpless and hopeless thinking, “Am I alone in this situation?” After visiting with my Woman's Imaging Center to confirm the cancer diagnosis, I received a BAG IT. This bag was full of wonderful information concerning cancer treatments; information that immediately helped me minimize my feelings of being alone and the unknowns.

As I continued my journey with the surgeon and oncologist, BAG IT was always there to help answer additional questions. BAG IT was always with me during the chemo and radiation treatments explaining the various treatment options, questions for the physicians, as well as involving my family in my recovery.

I cannot imagine how years ago women survived this ordeal without the wonderful information and support that the BAG IT provides to all cancer patients. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the hard work and wonderful support to the angels who put BAG IT together!

The Third Annual Be There for BAG IT Chili Challenge was held April 6, 2014 at the beautiful Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix.

chili stache

Ten amateur teams and three professional teams of chili-heads chopped, sautéed, stirred, and spiced it up to help raise funds to provide BAG IT for newly diagnosed cancer patients and their families in Maricopa County. In the Professional Division, a team of pros from The Cheesecake Factory Phoenix battled it out against two expert culinary teams from The Arizona Biltmore while amateur teams comprised of our fabulous participating sponsors (see list below) kicked up the heat (and then some!) in the Amateur Division.

As soon as Arizona Biltmore Executive Chef Gordon Maybury hit the timer, the al fresco kitchens quickly got Hot! Hot! Hot! Each team competed for the most points in three areas in pursuit of the ultimate bragging rights. Points were awarded for the chili cook-off, promotion of the chili by its team, and a bean bag toss game. When time was called, each team presented their chili masterpiece to a distinguished panel of five judges who tasted and scored each chili. A separate panel of three judges awarded more points for the promotion of each entrants’ chili with original songs and dances created by each team. This made for some interesting entertainment during dinner!

Overall Winners (and Bragging Rights!) went to:

1st place – Tatum Nails’ Team Rooster Sauce
2nd place – Scottsdale Medical Imaging's Ocho Caliente Senoritas
3rd place – Team Colon and Rectal Center of AZ

Special Awards (and more Bragging rights) went to :

Best Chili, Amateur Division – Scottsdale Medical Imaging's Ocho Caliente Senoritas
Best Chili, Professional Division – Arizona Biltmore Team
People’s Choice Chili – Tatum Nails’ Team Rooster Sauce

Encouraging and Sustaining Cancer Advocacy Programs and Efforts

unnamed

Building on its earlier success, BAG IT once again supported other community advocates in their patient education efforts by conducting the 4th Annual ESCAPE Leadership Conference for Community Cancer Advocates. In August 2014, we brought together 22 cancer advocates from across the country to network, learn new skills to
improve their organizations’ programs and services, and experience new techniques to encourage healthy lifestyles and prevent burnout.

Funds for this program were generously donated by

Ginger

Following the tragic death earlier this year of founder Sherri Romanoski’s mother, Ginger Guendelsberger, a memorial fund was established with the substantial number of donations made to BAG IT in Ginger’s memory. A cancer survivor of 15 years, Ginger volunteered at all ESCAPE Conferences as part of the ESCAPE Committee and Team. Outside of the conference, Ginger worked enthusiastically as a BAG IT volunteer, knitting chemo caps for patients, writing countless thank you cards for the organization, and working each and every fundraising event. She spread joy everywhere she went.

Philippa

The Ginger Guendelsberger Giving Spirit Scholarship Award was established and awarded to ESCAPE participant, Philippa Kibugu-Decuir. Philippa founded the Breast Cancer Initiative East Africa in 2008 to bring awareness, education, and empowerment to East African Communities in the US as well as in communities in Rwanda where she has reached out and educated over 3,000 Rwandan women on breast cancer prevention. Philippaa exemplifies the Giving Spirit in all her advocacy efforts.
